9. The series
10. Farscape follows an astronaut who is thrown across the galaxy through a wormhole and ends up aboard a living ship called Moya, where he joins a group of escaped prisoners running from a militaristic force called the Peacekeepers. The series is told in a serialised format in which each episode involves a self-contained story while contributing to a larger storyline.
11. The Sci-Fi Channel launched the series in North America on its SciFi Friday block on 19 March 1999 at 8:00 pm EST, serving as the network's anchor series. According to Wikipedia contributors, Subsequent broadcasts took place on Australia's Nine Network, as well as on YTV and BBC Two in the United Kingdom.
12. Rockne S. O'Bannon and Brian Henson first developed Farscape in the early 1990s under the working title Space Chase. The series was produced by Hallmark Entertainment, Nine Network and The Jim Henson Company, with O'Bannon, Brian Henson, Kris Noble, Robert Halmi Jr., David Kemper, Rod Perth, Richard Manning, Naren Shankar and Juliet Blake serving as executive producers. The two regular characters realised as animatronic puppets, Rygel and Pilot, were built entirely by the Henson Creature Shop. With the exception of the American actor Ben Browder, the cast is drawn almost entirely from Australia and New Zealand. According to Wikipedia contributors, Episodes run for around 50 minutes in the first season and roughly 44 minutes in seasons two through four, and the cost of producing each episode exceeded one million US dollars.
13. Music for the series was composed by Subvision in 1999–2000 and by Guy Gross from 2000–2003.
14. According to YouTube (Farscape), the episodes linked on this page are the rights holder's own uploads, published on the official Farscape YouTube channel at @FarscapeOfficial.
15. The channel describes the series as SYFY's first original series, and as Emmy-nominated and Saturn Award-winning. According to the channel, the series has been named one of TV Guide's 25 Best Cult TV Shows.
16. Production and cancellation
17. Farscape, which had been planned to run for five seasons, was unexpectedly cancelled once production on its fourth season had finished, leaving the show on a cliffhanger. The last four episodes of the first season began airing in January 2000, roughly four months following the previous episode, and the last four episodes of the third season were split from the rest of that season by an interval exceeding six months.
18. Farscape began airing in US syndication in October 2005 on Superstation WGN and affiliates such as Ion Television, before disappearing from syndication after roughly two years. The full Farscape series began running in syndication on the channel Pivot in 2013.
19. On 19 March 2019, the twentieth anniversary, all four seasons of Farscape and Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars were made available on Amazon Prime Video in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and several other countries. An original Farscape comic book miniseries was released in December 2008, in-continuity with the television show.
