Overview

Farscape is a science fiction series about an astronaut who is thrown across the galaxy through a wormhole and ends up aboard a living ship called Moya, where he joins a group of escaped prisoners running from a militaristic force called the Peacekeepers.^[1] The series is serialized: each episode tells a self-contained story while contributing to a larger storyline.^[1]

The Sci-Fi Channel launched Farscape in North America on its SciFi Friday block on 19 March 1999 at 8:00 pm EST, as the network's anchor series.^[1] It was later broadcast on Australia's Nine Network, on YTV, and on BBC Two in the United Kingdom.^[1]

Rockne S. O'Bannon and Brian Henson first developed Farscape in the early 1990s under the working title Space Chase.^[1] Hallmark Entertainment, Nine Network and The Jim Henson Company produced the series, with O'Bannon, Brian Henson, Kris Noble, Robert Halmi Jr., David Kemper, Rod Perth, Richard Manning, Naren Shankar and Juliet Blake as executive producers.^[1] The two regular characters realized as animatronic puppets, Rygel and Pilot, were built entirely by the Henson Creature Shop.^[1] Apart from the American actor Ben Browder, the cast is drawn almost entirely from Australia and New Zealand.^[1] Episodes run around 50 minutes in the first season and roughly 44 minutes in seasons two through four, and each episode cost more than $1 million to produce.^[1]

Subvision composed the series' music from 1999 to 2000, and Guy Gross from 2000 to 2003.^[1]

The episodes linked on this page are the rights holder's own uploads, published on the official Farscape YouTube channel, @FarscapeOfficial.^[4]

The channel describes Farscape as Syfy's first original series, Emmy-nominated and Saturn Award-winning.^[4] It also says the series has been named one of TV Guide's 25 Best Cult TV Shows.^[4]

Production and cancellation

Farscape had been planned to run for five seasons, but it was unexpectedly canceled once production on its fourth season had finished, leaving the show on a cliffhanger.^[1] Its broadcasts also came with long gaps: the last four episodes of the first season began airing in January 2000, roughly four months after the previous episode, and the last four episodes of the third season were separated from the rest of that season by more than six months.^[1]

Farscape entered US syndication in October 2005 on Superstation WGN and affiliates such as Ion Television, then disappeared from syndication after roughly two years.^[3] The full series began running in syndication on the channel Pivot in 2013.^[3]

On 19 March 2019, the show's twentieth anniversary, all four seasons of Farscape and Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars became available on Amazon Prime Video in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and several other countries.^[3] An original Farscape comic book miniseries, in continuity with the television show, was released in December 2008.^[1]

Glossary

The show is known for its liberal use of "frell" as a substitute for English expletives, alongside other invented words such as dren and hezmana.^[1]

frell

The crew's all-purpose obscenity, used everywhere English would use its own: as a curse, an intensifier and an insult. Said 80 times in 17 episodes.^[6]

dren

Excrement, and what you call something worthless. Said 33 times in 24 episodes.^[6]

arn

A unit of time of roughly an hour: characters wait half an arn and promise to be back within the arn. Said 54 times in 15 episodes.^[6]

microt

A moment: the show's smallest unit of time, used the way English uses "second". Said 70 times in 33 episodes.^[6]

cycle

A year. Ages, sentences and how long ago something happened are all counted in cycles. Said 214 times in 71 episodes.^[6]

solar day

A day. Said 31 times in 21 episodes.^[6]

yotz

A milder oath than frell, and mostly Rygel's: "for yotz sake", "what the yotz". Said 7 times in 6 episodes.^[6]

hezmana

Hell, as a place to be blown to. Said 1 time in 1 episode.^[6]

fahrbot

Mad. "Are you fahrbot?" is asked of a plan as often as of a person. Said 6 times in 6 episodes.^[6]

tralk

An insult, thrown at a woman, about the company she keeps. Said 12 times in 5 episodes.^[6]

fekkik

An insult, for a person being a fool about it. Said 3 times in 2 episodes.^[6]

drad

Good, or good-looking. Chiana's word. Said 4 times in 4 episodes.^[6]

eema

Backside, as in "quiet, my eema". Said 1 time in 1 episode.^[6]

mivonks

A coarse word for a man's anatomy, used of someone thinking with the wrong part of himself. Said 2 times in 2 episodes.^[6]

krendars

Money. Star charts cost five thousand of them. Said 5 times in 2 episodes.^[6]

motras

A unit of distance, used for the space between things. Said 4 times in 1 episode.^[6]

Leviathan

A living ship. Moya is one: a creature, not a vessel, with a Pilot bonded to her. Said 206 times in 60 episodes.^[6]

Starburst

How a Leviathan escapes: a burst of faster-than-light travel that cannot be aimed and cannot be repeated until she has the energy for it again. Said 205 times in 50 episodes.^[6]

Peacekeeper

The military the crew are running from, a hired soldiery that took over the job of policing. Said 577 times in 76 episodes.^[6]

DRD

The small yellow maintenance robots that run about inside Moya. Said 109 times in 40 episodes.^[6]

Prowler

The Peacekeepers' one-person fighter. Aeryn flies one. Said 73 times in 30 episodes.^[6]

command carrier

The Peacekeeper capital ship, and a small city with it. Said 77 times in 33 episodes.^[6]

Aurora Chair

The Peacekeeper device that reads a prisoner's memories and destroys the mind it reads. Said 13 times in 10 episodes.^[6]

the Living Death

What heat delirium does to a Sebacean: not death, but a state their own people kill them out of. Said 7 times in 3 episodes.^[6]

Unity

The Delvian sharing of minds. Zhaan offers it; it is not lightly taken. Said 25 times in 8 episodes.^[6]

Sebacean

Aeryn's species, and the Peacekeepers'. Human to look at, and unable to shed heat. Said 45 times in 21 episodes.^[6]

Luxan

D'Argo's species: a warrior people with tentacles at the jaw and a tongue that stuns. Said 48 times in 19 episodes.^[6]

Delvian

Zhaan's species: blue, plant-descended, and given to a priesthood. Said 36 times in 24 episodes.^[6]

Hynerian

Rygel's species: small, amphibious, and in his case deposed royalty. Said 20 times in 6 episodes.^[6]

Nebari

Chiana's species: gray-skinned, and governed by a cleansing of anyone who does not agree. Said 22 times in 5 episodes.^[6]

Scarran

The empire on the other side of the Peacekeepers, and the threat the later seasons turn on. Said 157 times in 12 episodes.^[6]

Crichtonisms

John Crichton is the only human aboard Moya, and the running joke of the Crichtonisms is that he explains himself in Earth references nobody around him has ever heard of.^[6] By Heartipedia's count of the captions of the rights holder's uploads, he calls the wormhole-teaching alien "Einstein" (one of the physicists he lists when told a thing is impossible) 14 times in 8 episodes.^[6]

He names the crew member Sikozu "Sputnik", after the first satellite, 6 times in 5 episodes.^[6] When he needs to explain a spaceship to people who live on one, he reaches for "Kirk, Spock and Star Trek" (9 times in 6 episodes).^[6] To describe being a long way from home, he uses "Dorothy, Toto and Kansas" from The Wizard of Oz (11 times in 7 episodes).^[6]

The Peacekeeper Wars

Brian Henson, the series' co-producer, later secured the rights to Farscape and directed the three-hour miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.^[1] Announced in May 2004, when the Sci-Fi Channel was owned by NBC Universal, the miniseries was broadcast on that channel on 17 and 18 October 2004.^[3] Rockne S. O'Bannon and David Kemper wrote it, and production ended in March 2004.^[3]

The miniseries earned a 1.7 household Nielsen rating and drew 1.96 million viewers.^[3]
