Summary

John Crichton goes in search of a friend with deep knowledge of wormholes.[1] What he finds instead is an alien who has taken on the appearance of his father, an offer of answers about wormhole technology, and a warning about a hostile species that the alien's people are trying to stay ahead of.[4]

Plot

An alien in the form of Crichton's father summons him through a residual mind-link left over from a previous meeting.[4] The alien reveals that Crichton's module was duplicated and shows footage of the copy being flown through an unstable wormhole by an unknown creature.[4] A phase stabilizer fitted to the duplicate makes wormhole travel possible, he explains, and only a handful of people could have built one; he suggests that the mechanic Furlow, who earlier had access to Crichton's module, may have constructed a duplicate stabilizer.[4] The alien gives his name as Jack and tells Crichton to keep his existence secret from the "false father image", Scorpius.[4] Jack describes his species, the Ancients, as a dying race that has located a new world, and warns that an unidentified hostile species (called "Chariots" in the automatic transcript) could follow them there using wormhole technology.[4]
