- Development and release
- Cold Symmetry developed Mortal Shell II as an action role-playing game, with Playstack serving as publisher. The studio announced the game during the June 2025 Summer Game Fest. According to Wikipedia, an expanded development team produced Mortal Shell II, which was described as a larger-scale continuation of the original Mortal Shell.
- Mortal Shell II was released worldwide for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S on 20 August 2026. An open beta ran before release; in its trailer Playstack stated that the beta permitted play for its first three hours and allowed selected progress to carry into the full release. The digital Devout Edition added Obsidian skins for playable Shells and offered early access lasting up to 72 hours.
- The Steam store listing for the game uses the spelling Mortal Shell II, while Playstack's official launch trailer used the alternative spelling Mortal Shell 2.
- Gameplay
- Mortal Shell II is a soulslike third-person action RPG: a difficult, combat-led single-player game in the style of the Souls series, finite rather than live-service. The game is presented from a third-person viewpoint and centers on action-oriented combat.
- Unlike the preceding game, Mortal Shell II omits a conventional stamina meter, allowing attacks and evasive actions without stamina-based limits. Combat includes close-range and projectile weapons, guard-breaking attacks, critical strikes and finishing moves. Weapons can be modified and upgraded to support several combat approaches.
- According to Wikipedia contributors, the shells a player inhabits are the series' one distinctive idea, carried over from the 2020 original: the player character is the Harbinger, who assumes control of eight fallen warriors called Shells, each with distinct abilities and fighting methods. Each Shell has individual abilities that can be improved during the game. Wikipedia contributors record that the eight Shells are distributed across the game world, and taking control of a Shell reveals the memories and personal story of its former warrior. Exploration yields additional Shells, weapons, upgrades and narrative material.
- Wikipedia contributors state that the game is set in an interconnected dark-fantasy world built as a compact, interconnected open area containing forests, temples, citadels and additional locations, and containing more than 60 dungeons. The Harbinger's task is to recover stolen eggs from the Undermether.
- The launch trailer The publisher's own launch trailer, posted by Playstack in August 2026, ahead of release.
- Eleven minutes of play IGN's official gameplay trailer, published in April 2026 (four months before the game shipped), combining cinematics with extended gameplay footage.
- Content warnings
- According to Valve (Steam), the Steam listing warned of violence involving blood-spattered sword fights, execution attacks and period firearms, and classified the game as potentially unsuitable for all ages or workplace viewing.
- Reception
- Metacritic lists a Metascore of 82 out of 100, rated generally favorable, based on 52 critic reviews, of which 44 (85%) were positive, 8 mixed and none negative. Its user score on Metacritic is 7.7, based on 533 user ratings.
