Overview

Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure made by Pearl Abyss, the South Korean company best known for the online role-playing game Black Desert.[2][16] It came out worldwide on Mar 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Apple's Mac, and Pearl Abyss published it itself.[2][1] The game is played alone: it began as a follow-up to Black Desert, but the studio turned it into a single-player story adventure aimed at the global console market.[16] Kim Dae-il, Pearl Abyss's co-founder and chairman, is its director and executive producer.[16] Development took seven and a half years, The Washington Post reported, on top of the years the studio spent building its own engine.[16] Since Aug 25, 2026 the game has been sold as Crimson Desert Enhanced, the name of a free update that every owner receives.[25][1] Its first paid expansion, Charting the Unknown, followed on Oct 29, 2026.[28] As of Nov 7, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 version Pearl Abyss has planned is not yet out.[15]

Kliff on the road and in a fight In Pearl Abyss's 50 minutes of early gameplay, from a 2024 build, Kliff walks across sunlit grassland, then fights a group of enemies in a reedy marsh beside a camp with sword and shield, sets off a red burst of a skill and knocks his foes into the water.

Story and setting

The game is set on Pywel, a continent split between warring factions.[5] Its hero, Kliff, leads a mercenary band called the Greymanes.[9] The story opens with a night attack by a rival band, the Black Bears, which separates Kliff from his comrades Oongka, Yann and Naira.[9] He sets out to find the survivors and to unite the forces of Pywel against a threat to the whole world.[3][1] Early in the journey he is led into the Abyss, a realm above the land, where a figure called the White Crow gives him the ability to glide.[9] The pre-release footage Pearl Abyss published in 2024 also takes Kliff through the region of Hernand, a duel and a run-in with the Goldleaf Merchants.[9] Three characters are playable in the finished game: Kliff, Oongka and Damiane.[22] Will Powers, Pearl Abyss's marketing and public relations director, said in January 2026 that Pywel's playable area is at least twice the size of Skyrim's.[29][16]

A siege against the Black Bears IGN's gameplay from an August 2025 build: in a besieged castle in Hernand, a soldier reports another outpost lost to the Black Bears, Kliff learns a comrade is holding out in the keep, and he is told to use the cannons against the enemy's watchtowers to reach him.

Gameplay

Crimson Desert is played from a third-person view in an open world explored on foot, on horseback and by gliding.[9] Its combat mixes weapons with bare-handed fighting and wrestling, uses objects in the surroundings, and pits Kliff against single bosses, duelists and large groups.[7] The world also offers climbing, skydiving, fishing, arm-wrestling and the taming of wild horses.[7] Boss fights are central: the first public demo, at gamescom 2024, was a set of four boss battles.[8] Since update 1.05.00 of May 2, 2026, any defeated boss can be fought again, in its original form or scaled to the player's progress, and 69 bosses were available for rematches that week.[22] Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty settings arrived in update 1.04.00 on Apr 23, 2026, along with presets for controls and options for color blindness and photosensitivity.[21] As of Nov 7, 2026 there is no multiplayer; Pearl Abyss says it is researching it.[15]

Combat in the launch trailer The official launch trailer cuts from a rider on a green plain to fights in red desert country: charges on horseback, a blast of green energy, a flash of white light across a dusty arena and a gout of fire in a dark camp.

Any of the three heroes can take on a boss rematch.[22] Updates have kept adding moves for each of them: version 1.04.00 gave Kliff a Weapon Throw skill and Oongka and Damiane a new Ambush skill.[21]

Meet the cast In Pearl Abyss's cast video, the actors behind Kliff, Oongka and Damiane introduce themselves and their characters: Damiane as a headstrong fighter and Oongka as a nomadic warrior devoted to his tribe and to the Greymanes.

Development

Pearl Abyss revealed Crimson Desert on Nov 13, 2019 at the G-Star show in Busan.[4] Production had begun in 2018 with Kim Dae-il as lead producer, and the company said the game started as a prequel to Black Desert before growing a story and characters of its own; the name had first belonged to a region of Black Desert.[4] At that point it was planned with both online multiplayer and single-player content.[4] A gameplay trailer at The Game Awards on Dec 10, 2020 set a release for winter 2021 on consoles and PC.[5] On Jul 29, 2021 Pearl Abyss withdrew that window without a new date, saying it wanted more time to add ideas and to protect the health and safety of its team.[6] The game returned at gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug 22, 2023 with a trailer built on Pearl Abyss's new BlackSpace Engine.[7] At gamescom 2024 visitors could play a boss demo, and on Sep 12, 2024 the studio released 50 minutes of edited early gameplay.[8][9]

The White Horn from the 2024 demo Pearl Abyss's video of the White Horn fight, released ahead of gamescom 2024: a huge white-furred beast emerges from the snow and fights Kliff in a blizzard on a mountain slope.

Release

Pearl Abyss had aimed at the fourth quarter of 2025, but on Aug 13, 2025 it moved the game to the first quarter of 2026, citing longer work on voice-overs and console certification and the coordination of physical distribution, and calling the move a strategic decision.[10] On Sep 24, 2025, during Sony's State of Play, it set the date of Mar 19, 2026 and opened pre-orders.[3][2] Its announcement listed the Standard Edition at $69.99 on Steam and a physical Collector's Edition at $279.99, and a Deluxe Edition added armor, a shield and horse gear.[2][3] The game reached first place on Steam's global top sellers chart the day before launch, with more than 3 million wishlists.[11] Pearl Abyss's share price had risen more than 70% since December 2025 on expectations, then fell more than 30% over the launch days, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.[11]

Reception

Reviews published on Mar 18, 2026 gave the game an average of 78 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, according to Kotaku's roundup.[19] Critics praised the size and detail of Pywel and the combat; Eurogamer called it technically accomplished, with killer combat.[19] The main complaints were the story and characters, which Eurogamer judged badly underdeveloped, cluttered systems, a restrictive inventory and messy controls.[19] Polygon wrote that the open world had shown it nothing interesting after ten hours.[19] Steam players were cool at first: about 61% of reviews were positive shortly after release.[11] On Nov 7, 2026, Steam showed 86% of 64,072 English-language reviews as positive, rated Very Positive.[1] Pearl Abyss's European chief executive, Lybee Park, later argued that critics had played a build that was not the launch version and had little time.[20] The game was nominated for PC Game of the Year and Best Audio at the Golden Joystick Awards 2026, and Pearl Abyss later asked players to vote for it as Ultimate Game of the Year; the winners are to be named in London on Nov 11, 2026.[31][32]

Digital Foundry on the open world After hours of travel from the opening village to a mountain over the desert, Digital Foundry's reviewer calls the variety of the world outstanding and the game one of the most impressive open-world experiences he has played, comparing it with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Breath of the Wild.

Controversies

Pearl Abyss apologized twice in the first week. On Mar 21, 2026 it apologized for not giving keyboard and mouse players a satisfying experience, and its first large patch adjusted gamepad and keyboard controls.[18][17] On Mar 22, after players found generative-AI images in the game, it said some 2D props made with experimental AI tools during early iteration had been left in by mistake.[17] The company said that use did not meet its internal standards, took full responsibility, and promised to find and replace the assets in later patches.[17] Game Informer reported that clear examples of generative-AI art had been found in the game before the statement, and the same patch also raised the health restored by food and added item storage at Howling Hill Camp.[17] A second dispute concerned the reviews themselves: in October 2026 Lybee Park said reviewers had played a pre-launch build with limited time, a claim made by the publisher and not by the outlets concerned.[20]

Sales

The game sold more than 2 million copies on its first day, the first time a Korean packaged game had done so, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.[11] Pearl Abyss announced 5 million copies on Apr 15, 2026, along with a peak of 276,261 players online at once on Steam.[12] It passed 6 million on Jun 11, 2026, 83 days after release, which Pearl Abyss called unprecedented for a Korean-made single-player game; Circana's data then ranked it second in United States game sales for 2026 to date.[13] In January to March 2026, with less than two weeks on sale, Crimson Desert brought in 266.5 billion won, split evenly between consoles and PC.[14] It sold about 2.11 million copies in April to June, 82% of them digital, for 136.1 billion won of revenue.[15] In August 2026 Pearl Abyss cut its revenue forecast for the game in 2026 to 468.9 to 497.3 billion won, from 644.1 to 734.8 billion, citing how stores share revenue, the timing of physical sales and deferred refunds.[15] As of Nov 7, 2026, Pearl Abyss had not published a total above 6 million.[13][15]

Updates and Charting the Unknown

Pearl Abyss patched the game for free at a fast pace: by Aug 12, 2026 it counted 17 patches and more than 20 new features and content additions.[24] Cross-save between PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and the Epic Games Store arrived in update 1.14.00 on Jul 16, 2026.[23] On Aug 25, 2026 the game became Crimson Desert Enhanced, version 2.00.00, a free update with new cutscenes and story moments, voice acting in German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese, and Arabic text.[25]

Crimson Desert Enhanced announced The announcement trailer for the free Enhanced update, shown at gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug 25, 2026, lists what it adds: new story moments, voice-over in more languages and every post-launch update so far.

Charting the Unknown, the first paid DLC, was announced on Sep 3, 2026 for Oct 15 at $24.99 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store.[26] On Sep 30 Pearl Abyss moved it two weeks, to Oct 29, 2026 at 22:00 UTC, to make it more polished and stable.[27] It released on that date with patch 2.04.00.[28] It lets players build or buy a ship, sail to uncharted islands and dive under the sea; it adds a quest for each of the three heroes after the main story, two castles to claim, businesses to rent, 17 residences, marriage, and a ten-stage combat challenge called the Garden of Trials.[28]

Charting the Unknown reveal The DLC's reveal trailer shows a ship with blue sails off a green tropical coast, a diver swimming over a reef beside a shark, and a battle that ends with a giant machine firing a red beam across the desert.

Pearl Abyss and what comes next

Pearl Abyss was founded in September 2010, listed its shares in September 2017 and has been based at its Home One headquarters in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, since July 2022.[30] Besides Black Desert and Crimson Desert, it lists two games in development, DokeV and PLAN 8.[30] In its Aug 11, 2026 earnings letter the company said a Nintendo Switch 2 version had reached a playable baseline and was targeted for the first half of 2027, though it could not yet confirm a firm schedule.[15] It said the number of further DLCs and their timing had not been decided, that it had no immediate plan for a mobile version, and that DokeV was targeted for the second half of 2028.[15] It called Crimson Desert a core IP it meant to keep expanding with a steady stream of content.[15]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

The Switch 2 version ships as a complete edition with the DLC

We expect Crimson Desert to come to Nintendo Switch 2 as a single edition that includes Charting the Unknown, not as the base game with the DLC sold later. We expect Nintendo to announce it in a Nintendo Direct before it goes on sale.

Why: Pearl Abyss's Aug 11, 2026 earnings letter said the Switch 2 version had reached a playable baseline and targeted the first half of 2027, and it grouped DLC, pricing and platform expansion together as the game's plan for long-term sales. By then the DLC will have been out for months everywhere else, and a late port sells best as the whole game in one box.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

A co-op mode starts with the Garden of Trials

We expect the first multiplayer of any kind in Crimson Desert to be a co-op boss challenge, built on the Garden of Trials or the boss rematches, rather than a shared open world. We think Pearl Abyss shows it, at least as a test, before the end of 2027.

Why: Pearl Abyss said in August 2026 that it was doing extensive research on multiplayer and that a shared mode would need new server architecture, game balance and live-service work. A closed arena of bosses avoids most of that, and the game already has one: the Garden of Trials, which arrived with Charting the Unknown, lets up to three characters fight ten groups in turn, and update 1.05.00 made every defeated boss replayable. We call it a long shot because the developers are moving to DokeV.

Prediction Confidence: Long shot Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Crimson Desert joins a subscription catalog

We expect Crimson Desert to be added to PlayStation Plus Extra or Xbox Game Pass before the end of 2027.

Why: Pearl Abyss's earnings letter put pricing and promotions at the heart of its plan for the game and said its aim was to widen the player base, not simply to cut the price. Sales slowed from more than 2 million copies on the first day to about 2.11 million in the whole of April to June 2026, and the company cut its revenue forecast for the year. A subscription deal pays up front and brings in players who might then buy the DLC.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Seven million by the first anniversary

We expect Pearl Abyss to announce at least 7 million copies of Crimson Desert sold by the end of March 2027.

Why: Pearl Abyss announced 6 million on Jun 11, 2026 and has published no total since. It sold about 2.11 million in April to June 2026 alone, and the free Enhanced update, the first DLC, the holiday sales and the anniversary all fall between that total and March 2027. A round milestone at the anniversary is the kind of news Pearl Abyss announced at 5 and 6 million.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Apr 2027 Made

Dropping the MMO was Pearl Abyss's best decision

We think turning Crimson Desert from the online game it was announced as into a single-player adventure was the best decision Pearl Abyss made. We think an MMO from the makers of Black Desert would have been one more online game, while the single-player version set a sales record for a Korean-made single-player game.

Why: In 2019 the game was planned with online multiplayer and single-player content, and in 2020 it was still described with online multiplayer. The single-player game it became sold more than 2 million copies on its first day, a first for a Korean packaged game, and 6 million in 83 days.
