Development and release

Battlefield 6 is a 2025 online-only first-person shooter developed by Battlefield Studios, the collective name for DICE, Criterion Games, Motive Studio and Ripple Effect Studios, and published by Electronic Arts.[1] Ridgeline Games also contributed to development before the studio closed in 2024.[1] Vince Zampella oversaw the project as head of Battlefield until his death in December 2025.[1]

The game came out for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S on October 10, 2025.[1] It is the eighteenth installment in the series and follows Battlefield 2042 rather than a numbered sequel, and its developers cited Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 as their main inspirations.[1]

Battlefield 6 runs on the Frostbite engine, and its development budget was reported in July 2025 to exceed an estimated $400 million.[1] EA CEO Andrew Wilson called the project an "all-in as a company" effort.[1] After the negative reception of Battlefield 2042, EA set up "Battlefield Labs", a closed, worldwide playtest program for the new game.[1]

EA officially revealed Battlefield 6 on July 22, 2025, and held two open beta periods in August 2025; the first drew more than 500,000 concurrent players on Steam.[1] A live-action trailer starring Zac Efron, Paddy Pimblett, Jimmy Butler and Morgan Wallen followed on September 28, 2025.[1]

The campaign trailer debuted at PlayStation's State of Play in September 2025.[1] Battlefield 6 is the first mainline Battlefield game since Battlefield 4 to include a linear narrative campaign.[1]

Gameplay

Battlefield 6 is built around large-scale infantry and vehicle combat.[1] Players fight in squads of up to four, with voice chat limited to squadmates.[1] Multiplayer has four character classes, Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon; the Recon class uses sniper rifles and can stop opponents from being revived by killing them with headshots.[1]

The game introduces the Kinesthetic Combat System for movement, which lets players peer around cover, hitch rides on vehicles and pull wounded allies out of harm's way.[1] It also places heavy focus on environmental destruction: explosives and heavy vehicles can bring structures down.[1] The design of this "Tactical Destruction" system drew inspiration from Battlefield: Bad Company 2.[1]

Battlefield 6 launched with nine maps, with more planned for post-launch updates.[1] Multiplayer brings back familiar modes such as Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush, Team Deathmatch and Domination, and adds a new mode called Escalation.[1] The Portal mode runs on the Godot engine, which provides tools for building maps and defining game logic.[1]

The game's story is set between 2027 and 2028, in a conflict between a fractured NATO and the private military company Pax Armata.[1] A free-to-play battle royale mode, RedSec (short for Redacted Sector), was released on October 28, 2025, with a knockout elimination mode called Gauntlet and support for Portal.[1]

Music

Henry Jackman composed the score for Battlefield 6, and the soundtrack also includes music from Limp Bizkit.[1] On September 12, 2025, Limp Bizkit released the single "Making Love to Morgan Wallen" to coincide with the game's release.[1] It was the band's last recording with bassist Sam Rivers, who died in October 2025.[1]

Live-service seasons

Battlefield 6 is run as a live-service game, with seasonal updates and matching battle passes.[1] Season 1 launched on October 28, 2025, in three parts titled Rogue Ops, California Resistance and Winter Offensive.[1] A 2026 roadmap confirmed Seasons 3, 4 and 5 for May, July and Fall 2026 respectively.[1] EA's Season 5 roadmap, published on 9 October 2026, set the season's start for 13 October and called it the game's biggest season yet, with two new maps (Vegas Strip and Area 51), the Rapid Royale mode and the return of a Dead Space crossover.[11]

Player counts on Steam

Battlefield 6 reached 747,440 concurrent players on Steam on its release day, October 10, 2025, according to Notebookcheck.[8] Another Notebookcheck report, based on SteamDB data, gave the launch figure as "over 747,000 players" on the same date.[7] The game helped push Steam to a record peak of over 41 million concurrent users on October 12, 2025.[7]

By early January 2026, the game's Steam player count sat between 30,000 and 90,000 concurrent players, a decline of nearly 90% from launch, with a low of 30,955 on January 9, 2026.[8]

Reception and sales

Battlefield 6 received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to Metacritic.[1] Its Metacritic scores were 82/100 on PC (as of October 15, 2025), 83/100 on PlayStation 5 (as of October 9, 2025) and 84/100 on Xbox Series X (as of October 22, 2025).[1] On OpenCritic, 90% of critics recommended the game as of October 9, 2025, and four Famitsu critics gave it a combined score of 35 out of 40 as of October 29, 2025.[1]

The single-player campaign, by contrast, received generally negative reviews; IGN's Simon Cardy scored it 5/10.[1]

On October 16, 2025, EA announced that Battlefield 6 had sold over 7 million units in its first three days, which it called the biggest launch in the series' history.[1] The game topped US sales charts in October 2025, ahead of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Ghost of Yōtei, and became the best-selling video game in the United States in 2025.[1] Later in 2025 it outsold Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the first game in the series' history to outsell a Call of Duty title.[1]

Battlefield 6 won Best Audio Design at The Game Awards 2025, Music Supervision – Video Game at the 16th Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and Shooter Game of the Year at the Ultra Game Awards 2025.[1]

Technical issues

Shortly after launch, Battlefield Studios confirmed on Twitter that it was diagnosing Windows issues affecting downloads from the EA App and Steam.[1] Vince Zampella publicly called the post-launch technical situation "honestly embarrassing" on Twitter.[1] The game uses Javelin, EA's kernel-level anti-cheat, which requires Secure Boot to be enabled; in August 2025 EA claimed Javelin had blocked over 300,000 cheating attempts.[1]

Compared with Wardogs

SteamDB's readings of Steam on 13 September 2026 set Battlefield 6 beside Wardogs.[9][10] They catch the two games at very different points: Battlefield 6 had been on Steam for eleven months and Wardogs for three days, so the player figures describe different moments in each game's life.[9][10]
