Overview

Final Fantasy VII Revelation concludes the remake project Square Enix began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024.[1][10][11] Producer Yoshinori Kitase described it at its reveal as the moment the series is "finally reaching its climactic finale".[1] The game follows Cloud Strife and his companions as they fly the airship Highwind across a planet threatened by Meteor, the destructive magic summoned by Sephiroth, who is described as nearing godhood.[3] It keeps the real-time combat with a pausable Tactical Mode that the first two parts used, and presents the whole planet as one seamlessly connected world.[3][7]

Cid and Yuffie fight together Square Enix's Combat and Exploration Deep Dive of Sep 3, 2026 shows Cid Highwind and Yuffie Kisaragi in a real-time battle, ending in one of the paired synergy attacks the series introduced in Rebirth and expands in Revelation.

The release falls in the 30th anniversary year of the original Final Fantasy VII, which came out in Japan on Jan 31, 1997.[7] Square Enix markets Revelation as a game that can be bought alone or with the first two parts in one bundle, and rewards players who carry save data over from them.[3]

Development and announcement

Revelation was made by the team behind Rebirth: Naoki Hamaguchi directs, Yoshinori Kitase produces and Tetsuya Nomura is creative director.[1] Square Enix credits the logo illustration to Yoshitaka Amano and the character designs to Nomura and Roberto Ferrari.[3] Teruki Endo returns as combat director, and told IGN that he felt the team had perfected the combat in the second game, so the third was about polish and player freedom.[12]

The game was revealed on Jun 5, 2026 as the closing announcement of Summer Game Fest, where Hamaguchi announced it on stage and Matt Mercer, the English voice of Vincent Valentine, narrated an extended look at its gameplay.[4][1] Hamaguchi named the game's central theme as "resolve", for both the characters and the team finishing the series.[13] Two days later Square Enix released its first details and screenshots, naming Wutai, the Mideel Archipelago and the Northern Continent as new areas, Vincent and Cid as new playable characters, and a new outfit system called FITS.[7]

Hamaguchi reveals Revelation Naoki Hamaguchi walks on stage at Summer Game Fest on Jun 5, 2026, says the game is "launching simultaneously on all platforms" and names its central theme: resolve.

At Gamescom Opening Night Live on Aug 25, 2026, Hamaguchi introduced "The Planet's Crisis", a trailer about the Weapons, the giant creatures the planet sends against Meteor; Game Informer identified Ruby, Emerald and Ultima Weapon in it, and the release window was still spring 2027.[14] The release date, Apr 8, 2027, was announced at PlayStation's State of Play on Sep 3, 2026, with a new trailer, a ten-minute Combat and Exploration Deep Dive and the opening of pre-orders.[8][15][3] Press played a demo set in the game's fourth chapter at Gamescom, with previews published on Sep 10, 2026.[5][16] A second demo at the Tokyo Game Show in September, a special chapter called "The Party Assembles", sent the party through the Whirlwind Maze.[6][17] At New York Comic Con on Oct 8, 2026, the English cast held a panel that showed footage of their last recording sessions.[18]

Several design decisions were explained in interviews. In the 1997 game the Highwind could land anywhere on the world map; Hamaguchi told IGN that this was not a realistic option in a detailed open world, so the team let characters jump from the ship by parachute, an idea he said modern players knew from games such as Fortnite.[12] Kitase and Hamaguchi told Inven Global that the story was expanded rather than condensed for the final part, that some locations, Rocket Town among them, were moved later in the story, and that Zack Fair's playable sections were substantially increased.[19]

Why the party parachutes IGN's second-take preview of Sep 18, 2026 relays Hamaguchi's explanation: a ship that lands anywhere did not suit a high-fidelity open world, so the team borrowed the parachute drop players know from Fortnite.

Hamaguchi told VGC, as reported by RPG Site, that the game would "probably" be around 200 GB, adding that "things are still getting worked out".[20] Every physical edition requires an additional download.[20] In October 2026 he asked players to "just believe" that the game runs well on lower-specification hardware, saying separate teams worked on gameplay and on optimization.[21]

Release, editions and platforms

Revelation is the first part of the trilogy to launch on all its platforms at once: PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC.[3] Remake first came out on PlayStation 4 and Rebirth on PlayStation 5, each reaching other platforms later.[4][22][23] Digital pre-orders for Switch 2 were announced for a later date than the others.[3]

The digital Standard Edition costs $69.99.[3] The $99.99 Premium Edition adds the Story Expansion Pass, 24 hours of early access and two in-game items, and the $109.99 Premium Plus Edition adds a digital mini soundtrack, a digital artbook and further in-game items.[3] A Final Fantasy VII Remake Series Trilogy Edition, at $84.99, bundles Remake Intergrade, Rebirth and Revelation on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC, but not on Switch 2.[3] Physical buyers can choose a Standard Edition, a $99.99 Deluxe Edition with a SteelBook case, a soundtrack CD and an artbook, or a $349.99 Collector's Edition sold only by the Square Enix Store, whose centerpiece is a statue of Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth.[3][24] Every digital pre-order includes a Mecha-Chocobo and Moogle summon, and save data from Remake Intergrade and Rebirth unlocks further summons and weapon skins.[3]

The Story Expansion Pass contains two story downloads, "Sephiroth" and "Vincent & the Turks", planned between winter 2027 and spring 2028, each also to be sold separately.[3][25] The ESRB rated the game Teen.[9] On Steam, early access for the Premium editions begins on Apr 7, 2027 at 14:00 UTC, and the minimum and recommended PC specifications were still listed as to be announced in early November 2026.[2]

Setting and story

Revelation picks up after Rebirth. Square Enix's description has Cloud and his companions grieving a beloved ally while Sephiroth nears godhood, racing aboard the Highwind to stop Meteor, with the tagline "The final battle has begun".[3] The planet has awakened the Weapons to fight Meteor, but they do not distinguish friend from foe, so the party must face them too.[7] War is spreading as well, with tension between the nation of Wutai and the Shinra Electric Power Company at a peak.[26]

Meteor and the Weapons The Reveal Trailer of Jun 5, 2026 sets up the story: a meteor "called forth to bring ruin to all", and a planet that answers by awakening its Weapons.

The game is divided into chapters, as Remake and Rebirth were; the Gamescom demo began in Chapter 4, with Cloud and Tifa absent from the party "for story reasons".[5][12] In the Tokyo Game Show demo, the party chases Sephiroth through the Whirlwind Maze, fights Gigas and Dragon Riders and faces a redesigned Jenova as its boss, and a vision of Sephiroth remarks that Cloud has no SOLDIER number.[6][17] Square Enix's Deep Dive says the game also draws on other works of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, with Cissnei, a Turk from Before Crisis and Crisis Core, among those shown.[26][15] Kotaku read the reveal trailer as showing Tifa and Cid leading the party at the North Crater for a stretch without Cloud, an interpretation Square Enix has not confirmed.[27]

Characters and cast

The playable party has eight members.[6] Square Enix's footage shows Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, Red XIII, Yuffie Kisaragi and Cait Sith fighting again, and two characters become playable in the trilogy for the first time: Vincent Valentine, a former Turk and gunslinger who can turn into the Galian Beast, and Cid Highwind, a pilot who fights with a lance.[28][7][4] Square Enix had not listed all eight by Nov 8, 2026, nor said whether Aerith Gainsborough, playable in Rebirth, is one of them.[6][7]

The eight of them The Release Date Reveal Trailer of Sep 3, 2026 ends with the party together aboard the Highwind, sure that nothing waiting below is anything "the eight of us" cannot handle.

Yuffie is the center of Chapter 4, a political story set in her homeland, Wutai, where IGN saw her father Godo meet Glenn Lodbrok, the hooded figure from Rebirth.[16] Red XIII leads a new story within Queen's Blood, the card game that returns from Rebirth.[26][8] Zack Fair returns with more playable sections than before.[19]

The English cast continues from the earlier games: Cody Christian as Cloud, Britt Baron as Tifa, John Eric Bentley as Barret, Briana White as Aerith, Max Mittelman as Red XIII, Suzie Yeung as Yuffie, Paul Tinto as Cait Sith and Caleb Pierce as Zack, with Matt Mercer as Vincent and J. Michael Tatum as Cid.[18][7] Sephiroth is voiced by Travis Willingham, who replaces Tyler Hoechlin; Kotaku reported that Hoechlin left over a scheduling conflict.[18][27] At New York Comic Con, Christian estimated that he had spent over 800 hours on the project.[18]

The cast on the finale In TV Insider's interview at New York Comic Con, released on Oct 13, 2026, a cast member describes finally recording lines fans had waited years for, and another notes that every character gets battle, comedy and vulnerable moments.

Gameplay

The whole planet is a single, seamlessly connected open world.[3][7] Players gain control of the Highwind early, fly it in real time, and drop to the ground by parachute without a loading screen, although some areas, Wutai among them, limit where they can land.[26][12] Previously visited locations become fast-travel points.[26] The Highwind also serves as the party's base of operations, where the FITS outfits are managed and characters such as Chadley and the card player Wize can be found.[26][15][5] Piko, a chocobo companion, levels up, gains the ability to sprint, glide and fly, and fights alongside the party.[26] A grappling gun pulls characters up to highlighted points, and in the field the player can switch to any party member at any time.[12][29]

Jumping from the Highwind Square Enix's Gameplay Introduction of Jun 5, 2026 shows a reluctant party member parachuting from the Highwind and descending "seamlessly from the sky above to the ground below".

Combat keeps the system of Remake and Rebirth: one character is controlled in real time, attacks fill the ATB gauge, and the gauge is spent on abilities, spells and items in Tactical Mode, with synergy attacks between pairs of characters and Limit Breaks.[28][26] Classic Mode, in which characters attack and move on their own while the player chooses commands, returns.[17] In the Tokyo Game Show build, Vincent's normal shots were not aimed by hand and his beast form had no time limit, but a Chaos meter rose while he stayed transformed and lowered his maximum HP; Cid's combos led into aerial moves, and his special command stored up to five spears for later abilities.[6]

Vincent's style IGN's Gamescom preview describes Vincent's pistol combos and his Galian Beast transformation, now an ordinary ability rather than a Limit Break, and gives a first impression of the FITS outfits.

FITS, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear, lets each party member wear one of four outfits, Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner, each of which changes that character's moveset and role in battle.[7][26] The Knight draws enemy attention to protect allies, and in the Tokyo Game Show demo the Summoner called entities to fight for a limited time.[26][6]

Side quests return as odd jobs, and a new rule lets the player choose which character takes one: the quest's story and play change with that choice.[3][26] Hamaguchi told IGN that Meteor's seismic shifts reshaped regions first seen in Rebirth and that their side quests are all new.[12] Kotaku reported that at points in the story the game offers to raise the party to the recommended level, a feature added because players who followed only Rebirth's story felt punished for being underleveled.[30]

A quest seen through Vincent In the Deep Dive, a Gongaga odd job about Malboros overrunning the jungle is taken by Vincent, and Square Enix's narrator explains that the story and gameplay change with the character chosen.

Minigames include a returning Gold Saucer with snowboarding and chocobo racing, and Queen's Blood, with opponents whose abilities change its rules; minigames can be set to an easier difficulty or skipped.[5][26][19] Inven Global reported a main story of about 35 hours and over 100 hours for players who complete everything.[19]

Queen's Blood returns The Deep Dive introduces Queen's Blood, the card game from Rebirth, and Red XIII's new saga of opponents with rule-changing abilities.

Previews

The first previews, published on Sep 10, 2026 after the Gamescom demo, praised the combat and questioned the demo's pacing. Game Informer's Wesley LeBlanc called the story-focused demo a disappointment but remained excited for the finale, found flying the airship far more exhilarating, and called the notifications of Chadley's assistant MAI intrusive.[5] IGN's Michael Higham said the combat had become even better with Cid and Vincent, but counted 10 to 15 minutes of notifications, pop-ups and tutorials in an hour of play, and asked the game to trust players to find things.[16]

Too many interruptions IGN's Michael Higham describes the stream of pop-ups and tutorials in the Gamescom demo, and the sight of Ruby Weapon roaming the desert outside the Gold Saucer.

IGN's second preview, from a two-hour session, described a game focused on freedom.[12] After the Tokyo Game Show demo, RPGFan's Matt Wardell called its cast "the most fleshed-out and likable versions" of the characters, and Game Informer's LeBlanc, who had been disappointed in August, wrote that playing Chapter 1 gave him what he had been looking for.[17][31] No review scores existed as of Nov 8, 2026, and no review embargo had been announced.

Place in the series

The original Final Fantasy VII was released for the PlayStation in Japan on Jan 31, 1997 and in North America later that year, holds a score of 92 for that version on Metacritic, and has sold over 15.1 million copies according to Square Enix.[7][32][33] Revelation also draws on the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, the later games and films set around the original's story.[26]

Final Fantasy VII Remake came out on PlayStation 4 on Apr 10, 2020 and scores 87 on Metacritic.[10] Square Enix reported 3.5 million copies shipped and sold digitally in its first three days, over 5 million by August 2020, and over 7 million by September 2023.[34][35][36] Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed on PlayStation 5 on Feb 29, 2024, reached PC on Jan 23, 2025 and Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on Jun 3, 2026, and scores 92 on Metacritic for PlayStation 5.[11][37][23] It won Best Score and Music at The Game Awards 2024, but Square Enix said in May 2024 that its sales had not met expectations, and it has published no sales figure for it.[38][39] Square Enix counts over 140 perfect review scores for Remake and Rebirth together.[3]

What is not known

As of Nov 8, 2026, Square Enix had not published the hour of release, the PC system requirements, the final install size, the prices of the Story Expansion Pass sold alone or the dates and contents of its two story downloads.[2][20][3] How the story ends, and how far it departs from the 1997 game, is unknown, and no public demo had been announced.[19][5]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation ships on Apr 8, 2027 everywhere at once

We expect Final Fantasy VII Revelation to come out on Apr 8, 2027 on all four announced platforms on the same day, Switch 2 included, with no delay. We think the Switch 2 version is the one most at risk of slipping, and we expect Square Enix to keep it on the date anyway.

Why: The date was set at State of Play on Sep 3, 2026, seven months ahead, pre-orders are open on every store, and a $349.99 Collector's Edition with a statue is already being made. Hamaguchi has publicly asked fans to trust that the game runs well on weaker hardware, which reads as a team that has seen it running. A game of around 200 GB on Switch 2 is the obvious technical strain.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Apr 2027 Made

Ruby and Emerald Weapon are optional superbosses, Ultima Weapon a story fight in the air

We expect Ruby Weapon and Emerald Weapon to be optional end-game battles, as they were in 1997, while Ultima Weapon becomes a required story fight fought partly from the Highwind. We think Cid's final Limit Break is used in that Ultima Weapon battle.

Why: The Planet's Crisis trailer put Ruby, Emerald and Ultima Weapon at the center of its marketing, and IGN already saw Ruby Weapon roaming the desert outside the Gold Saucer in the Gamescom demo, the same place it waited for players in the original. Hamaguchi told Inven Global that Cid's final Limit Break involves Weapon battles and the Highwind.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: May 2027 Made

Reeve takes off the mask

We expect Revelation to show Reeve, the Shinra executive behind Cait Sith, speaking to the party face to face, and we think Cait Sith's last scenes are played as Reeve's own goodbye rather than a toy's.

Why: Paul Tinto, Cait Sith's English voice, said at New York Comic Con that the character's mask gradually drops by the end of the trilogy. Cait Sith's line in the Release Date trailer, "On my honor as a cat", keeps the joke going, which is the usual setup for a reveal that undercuts it.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: May 2027 Made

Lucrecia appears in Vincent's story

We expect Lucrecia Crescent, the scientist at the heart of Vincent Valentine's past, to appear in Revelation in person or in a playable flashback, not only as a name.

Why: Vincent is one of the two new playable characters, has his own Story DLC planned, and Square Enix says the game ties itself to the other works of the Compilation, which includes Vincent's own game, Dirge of Cerberus. A game that gives Vincent this much room has every reason to give him his central relationship.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: May 2027 Made

Deepground is teased in "Vincent & the Turks"

We expect the second Story DLC, "Vincent & the Turks", to introduce or tease Deepground, the hidden Shinra army of Dirge of Cerberus, and we think it ends with a hook toward that game's events.

Why: Hamaguchi said the game adds connections to Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, and when Inven Global asked whether Deepground and the Tsviets return he declined to confirm it either way, an answer that left the door open. The DLC pairs the hero of Dirge with the Turks, the stars of Before Crisis.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Jun 2028 Made

The trilogy ends near the top of Metacritic

We expect Revelation's PlayStation 5 version to reach a Metascore of at least 90, level with or close to Rebirth's 92.

Why: Rebirth scores 92 and Remake 87, and the first previews praised the combat even when they disliked the demo's pacing. Game Informer's previewer, disappointed by the August demo, came away satisfied after playing Chapter 1 in September. Finales of beloved stories tend to be reviewed generously when the ending lands.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: May 2027 Made

Square Enix announces a sales figure this time

We expect Square Enix to publish a sales or players milestone for Revelation within two months of its release, which it never did for Rebirth.

Why: Square Enix announced Remake's first three days and later milestones, but said only that Rebirth's sales had not met expectations. Revelation launches on four platforms at once instead of one, which is the strongest reason a publisher would have for good news to share.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Jun 2027 Made

Choosing who takes a quest is the system that matters

We think letting the player choose which character takes an odd job is the most important new idea in Revelation, more than FITS. We think it is the first time the remake's side quests can carry real character stories instead of errands.

Why: Square Enix's Deep Dive shows a Gongaga quest told from Vincent's point of view and says the story and play change with the character chosen. IGN's second preview found Revelation's combat very similar to Rebirth's, and its first preview said FITS adds options rather than changing how a character plays.

Opinion Made

The real danger is clutter, not combat

We think the biggest risk to Revelation is the amount of interruption around its world, not any part of its combat. We think Square Enix should cut MAI's calls and tutorial pop-ups hard before launch, because a finale needs momentum more than a checklist.

Why: IGN counted 10 to 15 minutes of notifications, pop-ups and tutorials in an hour of the Gamescom demo, and Game Informer called MAI's interruptions intrusive. IGN's second preview noted that Rebirth's checklist of side content was its most common complaint.

Final Weapon: the Sephiroth DLC goes back to The First Soldier

Final Weapon , at 3:07 Check by: Jun 2028

"going to be focusing on that First Soldier stuff" (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think they are right, since Glenn Lodbrok, the young Sephiroth's companion in Ever Crisis's First Soldier story, is already part of Revelation.

Genesis VII: Revelation's ending ends the remake series

Genesis VII , at 11:23 Check by: May 2027

"very confident that the ending of Revelation will be the ending of the remake series" (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right about the main story, and we expect the last scene to point toward Advent Children rather than close every door.

Maximilian Dood: every summon is in

Maximilian Dood , at 20:44 Check by: May 2027

"they're going to put every freaking summon" (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think most of the original's summons appear, but we expect at least one, such as Hades, to be missing or reworked into the FITS Summoner's entities.
