Overview

ArcheAge Chronicles is an online action role-playing game in a seamless open world, developed and published by XL Games, the South Korean studio that made the original ArcheAge.[1][5] Its Steam page lists it as a massively multiplayer action and adventure game with XLGAMES as both developer and publisher.[1] The game is set on Auroria, a continent from the series' lore, roughly 50 years after the events of the 2013 original.[4] The player is an explorer working for an established trading company who looks into the crash of an airship and the intrigue around it.[1] It went on sale in Early Access on Steam on Nov 3, 2026, at 3:00 PM PST, and was still in Early Access as of Nov 7, 2026.[2][1] XL Games expects that phase to last about 9 to 12 months, and has said the timeline may change with player feedback and development progress.[1]

A quick look at Auroria XL Games' own tour of captured play: a camp, a potion brewed at a cauldron, a fight with a maned beast, a party against a giant bear, swimming among coral and a glide over a lake, while the developers say Auroria is meant to be wandered rather than followed by map markers.

Development as ArcheAge 2

The game began as ArcheAge 2, a sequel planned by XL Games with Kakao Games as its publisher.[7] In May 2021 Kakao Games told investors it would not be ready before 2024.[9] Kakao Games showed it publicly for the first time at the G-Star show in Busan on Nov 17, 2022.[7] In an interview filmed for that show, XL Games' founder Jake Song described ArcheAge 2 as a seamless open-world action MMORPG for PC and consoles, with action combat as the team's first priority.[8] Song stepped away from XL Games in early 2025, and the studio said later that year that the game was no longer led by a single person but by a group of senior leads.[12][13] Executive Producer Yongjin Ham has spoken for the project since its 2024 reveal.[3]

Jake Song presents ArcheAge 2 At G-Star 2022, XL Games' founder Jake Song (in Korean) calls ArcheAge 2 the sequel to ArcheAge: a seamless open-world action MMORPG for PC and consoles, with action combat as the top priority and Unreal Engine 5 visuals.

The rename and a new direction

XL Games and Kakao Games renamed the project ArcheAge Chronicles at Sony's State of Play on Sep 24, 2024, announcing it for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Unreal Engine 5.[5] The PlayStation Blog post that day gave a 2025 release.[6] Ham wrote that instead of a direct sequel the team had made a fresh take on the setting, moving away from large-scale competitive battles toward smaller group activities.[3] A developer diary of Oct 10, 2024 said the title reflected stories from different viewpoints in the same era, and set the goal of bringing the combat of single-player action games to a persistent online world.[4] The same diary promised twenty-player raids and a mode called the Crimson Rift.[4] XL Games later told Massively Overpowered to think of the game as a cross between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the original ArcheAge.[13]

Why the name changed In XL Games' Developer Diary of Oct 10, 2024 (Korean, with English subtitles), a developer says the game is not simply a sequel: the aim was to reinvent ArcheAge for a new era, and the word Chronicles fit that direction.

Delays and the road to Early Access

The release moved many times, usually on Kakao Games' quarterly investor calls.[9][10][11] The 2025 target given at the rename passed, and by August 2026 Kakao Games was promising Steam Early Access in the fourth quarter of that year, calling the schedule locked in.[6][11] On Sep 15, 2026, Ham announced that XL Games would publish the game itself, a decision he said gave the studio a direct relationship with Western players.[14] The first public test, a network test of about six hours for players in the US and Canada, ran on Sep 12, 2026, and Ham reported that more players connected at once than planned while the servers held.[14] A free Steam Next Fest demo followed from Oct 19 to Oct 26, 2026, open worldwide with two to three hours of quests.[16] It reached first place on the event's Top Demos chart on its opening day, and passed 20,000 players at once that day according to SteamDB.[17][19] XL Games set the Early Access date on Oct 27, 2026, the day after the demo closed, and opened pre-orders.[2]

Gameplay

Combat is real-time action modeled on single-player action games, with characters who jump, fall, roll, dash, block and parry.[1][4] At Early Access there are four classes, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons, eight in all.[1] Ham says each class was designed with three weapons, of which two arrive first.[30] Classes are tied to one gender at the start of Early Access, the complaint XL Games says it has heard most since the September test.[21] The studio plans to add gender choice one class at a time, starting with a female Warrior in a December 2026 update that also brings the Warrior's third weapon, the Gladius.[21] Life skills such as hunting, gathering, farming, housing and crafting return from the original.[1][4]

Three regions, four classes Executive Producer Yongjin Ham (in Korean, with English subtitles) says the Early Access build has three regions of Auroria and four classes, each designed with three weapons, two of them first.

How the combat works FrozenCloud's review of the September 2026 network test explains the two-weapon system, swapped on the spot, with its own moves for each weapon and a stamina bar that punishes spamming dodges.

PvP, trade and the shared world

Each zone is split into copies called channels that hold about 100 players each, a number XL Games calls a design choice rather than a server limit.[15] In standard channels players cannot attack each other; in PvP channels anyone outside a player's party and guild can, and players switch between the two at a Nui Statue with a cooldown.[15] Monster kills in PvP channels give 10 to 15% more experience.[15] PvP channels have no set objectives or scheduled battles yet: Creative Director Jay Lee wrote that the team preferred to leave conflict to the players rather than script it.[15] Trade runs remain: players make trade goods, haul them by wagon to sell in other regions, and face more risk of attack as the stakes rise.[4] XL Games' own tour of the game calls housing, crafting and trade its ArcheAge DNA.[32] Housing moved from open-world plots to dedicated housing zones.[6] Characters cannot move between servers, and players on different servers cannot play together, during Early Access.[22]

PvP by channel Azrial walks through XL Games' PvP post: the same zone, quests and monsters, with PvP switched on at a Nui Statue and a cooldown so a losing player cannot escape.

Trade, crafting and the wagon XL Games' tour shows trade goods being made and a wagon driven along a road by night and day, as the narration calls housing, crafting and trade the game's ArcheAge DNA.

Price and business model

ArcheAge Chronicles is sold once, not free to play: Ham announced on Oct 21, 2026 that Early Access costs $29.99 in the US and 36,000 won in Korea, with no subscription.[20] Steam listed it at $29.99 on Nov 7, 2026.[1] Pre-orders came with a costume, the Dawn Pioneer Set, for one class.[2] In an Oct 7, 2026 video, Ham promised that the game would never sell items that make a character stronger or speed its growth, and said there would be no paid shop when Early Access began.[30] If a shop opens later, he said, its contents and timing will be announced in advance.[30] Steam's FAQ adds that the price may change at full release, with any change announced beforehand.[1] MeinMMO wrote that the original's pay-to-win past was one reason some genre fans approached the new game warily.[18]

The Early Access price In XL Games' video of Oct 21, 2026, Ham says the game is bought once with no recurring subscription, and that the Early Access price was set to keep that first purchase accessible.

Launch and reception

Early Access opened on Nov 3, 2026 with three regions of Auroria, Diamond Shores, Gylden Ruins and Astron Plains, which XL Games describes as more than 60 areas and about twenty times the size of the demo.[21][1] The launch peaked at 26,244 players at once on Steam, according to SteamDB figures reported by MeinMMO.[25] By comparison, the original ArcheAge never passed 7,000 at once on Steam.[19] Steam's own count was 10,367 players at 06:18 UTC on Nov 7, 2026.[29] User reviews were Mixed, 53% positive of 1,460, on the morning of Nov 4, 2026.[24] On launch day players reported tutorial quests that could not be finished, bosses that failed to respawn, crashes and stuttering, and XL Games apologized and said fixes for the first two were ready.[23] MeinMMO found that most of the content can be seen in about ten hours, and quoted a Steam reviewer who called the game a poor copy of New World, while noting praise for its graphics, fast combat and world design.[25] After the demo, the same outlet had found the combat lively but too unpolished and not demanding enough.[18]

XL Games and the ArcheAge name

XL Games' original ArcheAge launched in South Korea in 2013 and in Europe in 2014.[19] Kakao Games, by then its Western publisher, closed the North American and European servers on Jun 27, 2024, citing a falling player count.[31] The studio has been under strain: it reported an operating loss of 24.2 billion won on revenue of 31.1 billion won in 2025, and its staff fell from 449 at the end of 2025 to 342 at the end of June 2026.[28] On Sep 8, 2026, XL Games agreed to sell the ArcheAge intellectual property and its ArcheAge S project to Align Studio, a new developer funded by its parent company Kakao Games, for 39.2 billion won, with a transfer date of Oct 27, 2026.[26][27] A corrected filing kept the Chronicles project with XL Games, which continues to develop it.[26] MTN reported that this left Chronicles as the studio's only new game of its own.[27]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Ships and a sea trade run before 1.0

We expect XL Games to announce ships for ArcheAge Chronicles before its full release, with a trade run that crosses water between two regions of Auroria. We think naval combat in PvP channels comes with them, as the risky half of that route.

Why: Trade runs, housing and crafting are what XL Games itself calls the game's ArcheAge DNA, and the original ArcheAge was known for carrying goods by sea. The 2024 announcement promised "treacherous seas" among Auroria's landscapes, Early Access has only three regions, and the Steam FAQ promises more regions before full release. A trade game on a continent being settled by people from overseas has an obvious next road, and it is the coast.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

The Crimson Rift returns as scheduled PvP

We expect the Crimson Rift, promised in XL Games' 2024 developer diary and not mentioned since, to come back during Early Access as a scheduled event in PvP channels with a reward for winning. Our prediction is that it is the first structured PvP the game gets, before any arena.

Why: PvP channels launched with no set objectives, no scheduled battles and no reward for defeating players, and Creative Director Jay Lee called that a simple framework to build on. The 2024 diary named the Crimson Rift as an iconic mode alongside twenty-player raids, and a name already announced is cheaper to bring back than a new one. Players who choose a PvP channel for 10 to 15% more experience will want something to fight over.

Prediction Confidence: Long shot Check by: Nov 2027 Made

Consoles wait for the full release

We expect no PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S version of ArcheAge Chronicles to come out before 2028. We think the console versions arrive with the full release or after it, not during Early Access.

Why: The console versions were announced on Sep 24, 2024 for a 2025 release, but Early Access opened on Steam for Windows only, with no console date. XL Games now publishes the game itself, its staff fell by about a quarter in the first half of 2026, and launch week was spent on tutorial bugs, crashes and stutter. A smaller studio fixing a PC launch is unlikely to certify two console versions of a game whose content is still changing every month.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Dec 2027 Made

The best idea in it is the PvP channel

We think the choice to make PvP a channel players pick, not a zone they are forced into, is the best decision in ArcheAge Chronicles and the most underrated one. Our view is that the veterans who miss the original's open faction wars are asking for the very thing that emptied its Western servers.

Why: The original's Western servers closed in 2024 for lack of players, while the Chronicles demo passed 20,000 players at once on its first day and the launch peaked at 26,244, almost four times anything the original reached on Steam. Channels of about 100 players with optional PvP let both kinds of player share one world, and a cooldown on switching keeps it honest. What the game gets wrong is elsewhere: combat feel and stutter, which XL Games itself has put on the long list.

Anders: the roadmap in December

Anders , at 6:52 Check by: Dec 2026

"So expect it soon after launch. I expect December." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right, because XL Games already tied its first update to December and needs a public plan to answer its Mixed launch reviews.

Ser Medieval: the Vitality Staff right after the Gladius

Ser Medieval , at 1:49 Check by: Jun 2027

"They are internally testing the vitality staff. We know that the Gladius is going to be the first one coming, but that one's probably going to be right after." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right that the Mage's third weapon comes second, since XL Games adds them one class at a time and a weapon already in testing is the closest to ready.
