Overview

Stranger Than Heaven is a single-player action-adventure developed by RGG Studio (Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio) and published by SEGA.[1][14] Steam's store page describes a saga of about fifty years that begins when Makoto Daito, a young man of Japanese and American descent, stows away on a ship from San Francisco to Japan in 1915.[1] The game moves through five cities in five eras of modern Japan, and its two main activities are fighting, with Makoto's left and right sides controlled separately, and a career as a showman who records sounds, recruits performers and stages shows.[1] It is set in the same fictional world as RGG Studio's Like a Dragon games, including the Tojo Clan crime syndicate, but its makers present it as a new title rather than a series entry.[11] GamesRadar+ called it the studio's first new intellectual property in six years, after Judgment.[6] As of Nov 7, 2026 the game has not been released; SEGA has dated it for Jan 15, 2027.[2]

Makoto fights a gang in Kokura RGG Studio's own playthrough of its Gamescom 2026 demo, a pre-release build: Makoto Daito takes on a street gang in 1915 Kokura.

Development

RGG Studio first showed the game at The Game Awards 2024 under the working title Project Century, with a trailer set on a street in 1915 Japan that GamesRadar+ found slower and bloodier than Like a Dragon.[6][5] At Summer Game Fest in June 2025, SEGA of America confirmed that the project formerly known as Project Century would be called Stranger Than Heaven and released a new teaser.[5] Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama told Denfaminico Gamer that he had first conceived the story as a trilogy and then packed it into one game whose main story he called quite massive.[7] AUTOMATON, reporting from a June 2026 group interview, wrote that the game had been six to seven years in the making.[8] Director Mikinobu Abe told Game Informer that the starting point was a question the team had asked while making the Yakuza games: who would create an organization such as the Tojo Clan or the Omi Alliance, and why.[9] Yokoyama confirmed in June 2026 that the game contains no generative AI at all, while remarking that the scale of Grand Theft Auto VI could push other developers toward it.[23]

The studio does not aim for strict period accuracy. Yokoyama said the team prioritizes convincing, game-like lies and uses historical material only as a reference point, citing the Hotel New Akao, which appears in the game's 1951 Atami although the real hotel opened in 1954.[8] Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto told Inven Global that the level design of each city is the most detailed the studio has made, as quoted by AUTOMATON.[25]

Abe on reimagining each era Director Mikinobu Abe tells IGN at Gamescom 2026 that nobody knows what 1915 Kokura was really like, so the team reimagined each era as what he calls realism fiction.

Setting and story

Makoto Daito is the son of an American father and a Japanese mother; he loses both parents young and leaves the United States in 1915 as a stowaway on a ship bound for Japan.[4] IGN's October 2026 preview describes the opening, in which he flees San Francisco after being blamed for a crime he did not commit.[12] On board he meets Orpheus, a smuggler, and Yu Shinjo, a young man of mixed heritage who becomes his friend and rival.[4] The five eras are Kokura in 1915, Kure in 1929, Minami in Osaka in 1943, Atami in 1951 and Shinjuku in 1965.[1] Xbox Wire's recap of the May 2026 broadcast describes Kokura as an industrial hub, Kure as a shipbuilding city where Makoto joins the Iwaki Family and becomes known as the Red Oni, and Minami as an entertainment district where yakuza and the Italian Mafia compete.[4] The same broadcast opened with Makoto announcing that he was starting his own crime family, which CGMagazine reported as the founding of the Tojo Clan.[10] Yokoyama said a tremendous secret will be revealed in the final, Shinjuku chapter.[4]

Five cities, from snow to neon From the Xbox Presents broadcast of May 2026: streets of the five eras, from snowfall to neon signs, a dice game, cherry blossoms and the Kamurocho gate.

Combat

Combat was built for this game, and producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto called it one of its biggest features.[4] Makoto's right arm and leg are mapped to the right bumper and trigger and his left side to the left pair, so a player can block with one arm while countering with the other, charge attacks, tackle and finish enemies.[4] In IGN's preview, the bumpers give light attacks and the triggers heavy ones, and holding guard while striking with the side an attack comes from parries it and staggers the attacker.[12] Weapons include knives, hammers, katanas and an odachi, and each changes the moveset; IGN found the heavy hammer good for breaking guards but slow.[12][4] Abe told IGN that the studio reworked the combat after feedback from earlier demos.[12] Not every preview was won over: PCGamesN found the street fights clunky and over-engineered and group fights overwhelming, though it expected the system to feel more natural over a full game.[13]

Showbiz and side activities

Alongside fighting, Makoto becomes a showman who produces gigs for other artists.[4] He scouts performers by gathering rumors and listening to conversations, and he can record sounds while exploring, such as a broom, a passing train or an enemy hitting the curb, then use them with composers to make original music.[4] IGN described the mode, called Showbiz, as a fusion of the club management and karaoke minigames of earlier RGG games: the player hires musicians, sets up the stage, prices tickets and chooses songs, then times lights and effects in an easygoing rhythm game during the show.[12] Each song's lead, rhythm, bass and drum parts can be given a different instrument, mood or tonality.[12] Yokoyama has said the game has no cabaret club and no karaoke.[11] Previews also showed beigoma spinning tops, menko cards, mahjong, a shooting gallery, five-finger fillet, arm wrestling and a pit-fighting arena in Kure.[12]

Planning a show SEGA's Showbiz In-Depth Look of September 2026 runs through the choices before a performance: the setlist, the star singer, which musician plays which part, and the promotion.

Cast

SEGA's cast page credits each character as portrayed by a performer.[18] Makoto Daito is played by Yu Shirota and Yu Shinjo by Dean Fujioka; Snoop Dogg plays Orpheus, Ado plays Keiko Shirai, Tori Kelly plays Suzy Day and Takaya Kuroda plays Takeo Godai.[18] The Kure boss Genzo Iwaki is portrayed by the late actor Bunta Sugawara: SEGA obtained formal consent from his family, RGG Studio built the character in CG from archival footage and photographs supplied by Toei, and Takashi Ukaji performs the voice.[20][18] The theme song, also titled Stranger Than Heaven, features Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado and Tori Kelly.[24] On Jun 5, 2026, SEGA announced that Tupac Shakur portrays a character named Amaru, a portrayal it says is made possible with the permission and ongoing supervision of his estate, Amaru Entertainment.[2] SEGA says RGG Studio is crafting every aspect of the character in close collaboration and without the use of AI, with a design based on archival footage and photographs, and SEGA Corporation adds that it is built in CG.[2][3] SEGA's September character release describes Amaru as a man in hiding in Japan and lists his voice actor as to be announced.[19]

Release, editions and platforms

The May 6, 2026 Xbox Presents broadcast gave a winter release and confirmed that the game would be in Game Pass from its first day and an Xbox Play Anywhere title.[4] At Summer Game Fest on Jun 5, 2026, Yokoyama confirmed on stage a worldwide release on Jan 15, 2027 for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5, and pre-orders opened the same day.[2] As of Nov 7, 2026, Steam's page lists the release as Jan 14, 2027, and its minimum and recommended PC requirements are still marked to be determined.[1] The US Xbox Store sells the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $89.99, and lists the game under Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.[14] The Deluxe Edition adds an outfit for Makoto, four weapons, four skilled performers, three stage production items, a poster, a record player and a camera, and every pre-order includes the weapon Dosu: Kagekiri.[1][3] A physical Collector's Edition for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 adds a 12-inch vinyl record, a SteelBook and a premium box; GamesRadar+ lists it at $129.99.[2][15] Steam lists 13 languages for text, with full audio in English and Japanese only.[1]

Relationship to Like a Dragon

Whether the game belongs to the Like a Dragon series has been argued since its first full showing. CGMagazine headlined the May 2026 broadcast as confirming a Yakuza prequel that chronicles the rise of the Tojo Clan, and IGN's preview described a story leading toward where the clan began in 1960s Kamurocho.[10][12] Its makers resist the label. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Yokoyama told AUTOMATON that the team calls it a completely new title because it has no cabaret club or karaoke and different controls and progression, and that "we don't think it would be right to call it a series entry," while acknowledging that the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho appear.[11] Abe told Game Informer that the team wanted to tell how such an organization begins, but did not set out to make a prologue to the Yakuza or Like a Dragon series.[9]

Pre-release reception

SEGA said on Sep 3, 2026 that the game had passed 1 million wishlists across all platforms, more than four months before launch, and called it RGG Studio's most wishlisted title before release.[16] Press played a three-hour build covering the opening, Kokura and parts of Kure and Osaka, with previews published on Oct 21, 2026.[12] IGN's Michael Higham, unsure of the combat after a 45-minute demo earlier in the year, wrote that the new build had turned him around completely.[12] PCGamesN praised the opening and the writing, especially an intimate bar scene in Kokura, and concluded that the game oozes style.[13] Tupac Shakur's casting drew criticism: Kotaku's Ash Parrish objected to imagining who the rapper would be decades after his death while crediting the studio for being open about its reasons.[22] Yokoyama told Game Informer that the idea came from Snoop Dogg and that the team wanted the family involved at every step.[21] Snoop Dogg, who also appears in the game, said that Tupac's likeness and spirit still live on, as CBC News reported.[26] On Sep 14, 2026, SEGA and Netflix announced a live-action film adaptation as part of a slate of SEGA adaptations, with no cast or date announced.[17] As of Nov 7, 2026, with the game not yet out, its Steam page showed no user reviews.[1]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Shinjuku's secret is the Tojo name

We expect the "tremendous secret" of the 1965 Shinjuku chapter to be that Makoto Daito takes the name Tojo, so the crime family he founds becomes the Tojo Clan under his own new name. We think the game ends in Kamurocho with Makoto as the clan's first chairman.

Why: Yokoyama promised a tremendous secret in Shinjuku and nowhere else, the May 2026 broadcast opened with Makoto announcing his own crime family, and Abe said the whole project began with the question of who would found an organization like the Tojo Clan, and why. A fifty-year life story that starts with that question and ends in Kamurocho has one answer left to give: whose name the clan carries.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Feb 2027 Made

A Nintendo Switch 2 version is announced

We expect SEGA to announce a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Stranger Than Heaven before the end of 2027, with no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version.

Why: SEGA's launch list names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud and Steam, and no Nintendo platform. SEGA has already followed a PlayStation, Xbox and PC launch with a later Switch 2 date for its other early 2027 game, Persona 4 Revival, and a new series that wants a second wave of buyers after Game Pass needs a platform where it is not in a subscription.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

A million sold within two months

We expect SEGA to announce that Stranger Than Heaven has sold at least 1 million copies by the end of March 2027.

Why: SEGA reported more than 1 million wishlists four months before launch and called it RGG Studio's most wishlisted game before release. Previews in October turned from doubt to praise, and SEGA has announced milestones like the wishlist count as soon as it reached them. Game Pass from day one will take some buyers away, which is why we do not rate it Likely.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Apr 2027 Made

The Netflix film tells one era, not fifty years

We expect the Netflix live-action film, once its story is announced, to cover a single era of Makoto Daito's life, most likely the 1929 Kure years when he becomes the Red Oni, rather than the game's whole fifty years.

Why: Netflix and SEGA announced the film as live-action crime, and the game's five eras each have their own city and cast. Kure is the chapter where Makoto joins the Iwaki Family and earns his name, and its boss is portrayed by Bunta Sugawara, whose yakuza films SEGA and Toei honored with a trailer in September 2026. It is the most self-contained crime story the game has.

Prediction Confidence: Long shot Check by: Nov 2028 Made

Refusing the Like a Dragon label is the right call

We think RGG Studio is right to sell Stranger Than Heaven as a new title and not as a Like a Dragon prequel, even though the Tojo Clan and Kamurocho are in it. We think the label would have bought it a guaranteed audience at the cost of the new one it needs.

Why: Yokoyama gave concrete reasons, not marketing ones: no cabaret club, no karaoke, different controls and different progression. The combat is new enough that IGN needed three hours to warm to it and PCGamesN still found it clunky, and series fans judging it as the next Yakuza would measure it against games it is not trying to be. Its 1 million wishlists came while it was billed as something new.

Maf Otaku Defined: Makoto forms his own family, the Tojo Clan

Maf Otaku Defined , at 3:41 Check by: Feb 2027

"I'm certain that there's going to be a major plot in the story where Mako decided on forming his own Yakuza family, which leads to the Tojo clan." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think the May 2026 broadcast, which opened with Makoto founding his own crime family, has already proved him half right, and that the Shinjuku chapter finishes the job.

Gokudoni: Takashi becomes the acting Tojo chairman of Yakuza 0

Gokudoni , at 2:48 Check by: Feb 2027

"He may also wind up being the Takashi that we met as the acting Tojo chairman in Yakuza 0" (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think the link is plausible, since Takashi is Makoto's protégé and the story runs to 1965, but we doubt RGG Studio will spell it out in a game it refuses to call a series entry.
