Overview
Marvel's Wolverine is a third-person action game about Logan, the Marvel Comics mutant also known as Wolverine, made by Insomniac Games, the PlayStation studio behind Marvel's Spider-Man.[1][2] It is set in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man games and is the first game centered on Wolverine since X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009.[10] Unlike the open-world Spider-Man games, it is a linear game that game director Mike Daly described as "globe-trotting" and a "rollercoaster".[8] It came out on Sep 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5 only, after a reveal in September 2021.[1][11]
Logan stalks a Trask outpost From the June 2026 extended gameplay reveal: Logan moves through a Trask outpost from cover and takes the guards down one by one.
The game is rated M by the ESRB for blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, partial nudity and drug references.[7] It supports the PS5 Pro, DualSense vibration and trigger effects, Remote Play and cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members, and plays offline.[7] Voice acting is offered in English and 11 other language versions, including Arabic, Japanese, Polish and two versions each of Spanish and Portuguese.[7]
Development
Insomniac Games was founded in 1994 by Ted Price and became a Sony studio on Aug 19, 2019, a year after it released Marvel's Spider-Man.[12][13] Wolverine was announced by Insomniac's Ryan Schneider on Sep 9, 2021, in the same PlayStation Showcase that revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 2.[11] His post named Brian Horton as creative director and Cameron Christian as game director, called the project "a standalone game" and said it was "very early in development".[11] In 2024 Horton left Insomniac, and Marcus Smith became creative director with Mike Daly as game director.[14] Price retired at the end of March 2025, more than 30 years after founding the studio, and three co-studio heads took over.[13]
The story was written by Walt Williams, the writer of Spec Ops: The Line, according to IGN's preview.[15] In December 2023 the ransomware group Rhysida posted about 1.3 million files stolen from Insomniac, including material from Wolverine's development, after the studio did not pay a ransom.[16] The game's next official showing came four years after its reveal, in September 2025.[9][11]
As violent as the comics Insomniac's developers recall the question they heard most: whether a Wolverine game would be as violent and visceral as the character in the comics.
Insomniac set out to make the game as violent as the comics, with new technology for blood and a set of filters for players who want less of it.[17][18] Brian Wyser, the studio's senior animation director, told But Why Tho? that the team "definitely wanted to differentiate Wolverine from Spider-Man": Spider-Man moves for style, while Logan does something flashy only when it is the quickest way to the next enemy.[19] The cover art was made with the comic artist Jock.[9]
Function over form Brian Wyser explains the animation pillars that set Logan apart from Insomniac's Spider-Man: form over function for Spider-Man, function over form for Logan.
Announcement and release
After the 2021 teaser, the game's first gameplay was shown at a State of Play on Sep 24, 2025, with a "Fall 2026" window, cover art by Jock and Liam McIntyre named as Logan.[9] That showing named Madripoor, the Canadian wilderness and Tokyo as settings, and featured Mystique, Omega Red and the Reavers.[9] The date, Sep 15, 2026, was announced on Feb 24, 2026 in a six-second video on Insomniac's social channels, on a day when Sony's own State of Play did not include the game.[20] A second State of Play on Jun 2, 2026 showed an extended stretch of gameplay and opened pre-orders.[1]
Two editions were sold: the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition at $79.99, which adds five suits, five claw designs and three Technique Points, all described as cosmetic apart from the points.[1] Pre-orders came with the Classic Brown suit, Reflective Claws, one Technique Point and four PlayStation avatars.[1] Sony also sold a Battle Yellow PS5 Digital Edition bundle at $649.99, with matching DualSense controllers and console covers, from Sep 15, 2026.[21] Hands-on previews were published on Aug 13, 2026, and reviews on Sep 10, five days before launch.[22][23]
Marketing in the last weeks centered on Trask: the launch trailer, posted by Marvel Entertainment on Sep 4, 2026, has a character warn that Trask has "figured out a way to detect mutants with machines" and ends on a robotic "Mutant detected".[24] Logan's actor, Liam McIntyre, also narrates the official Game Features trailer, which walks through the combat, the regions and the post-game.[25]
The launch trailer The launch trailer leans on Trask's machines that detect mutants, ending on a robotic "Mutant detected".
The game launched on Sep 15, 2026 with update 1.001.004, whose fixes included English voice-over that did not play on consoles set to another language.[26] Its default Performance mode runs at 60 frames per second with ray tracing on a standard PS5, which Insomniac called a first for one of its games.[27] Upscaling uses PSSR on the PS5 Pro and Sony's QSSR on the standard PS5.[7] No PC version had been announced as of Nov 8, 2026; Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Sony did not plan to bring single-player PS5 exclusives including Wolverine to PC, while sources said such plans were "constantly evolving".[28][7]
Story and setting
The story takes place before the X-Men exist.[15][29] Logan follows mutants captured by the Reavers, a cybernetic militia for hire, who deliver them to Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist with a fanatical belief in human superiority.[1] To stop him, Logan rejoins Team X, a mutant task force he had left three years earlier, and meets Jean Grey, a powerful telekinetic and emerging leader of the captured mutants.[1] The store page calls it an emotionally driven story about Wolverine's forgotten past.[2]
Team X before the X-Men IGN's previewer sets out the premise: Wolverine, Sabretooth and Mystique form Team X under Nathaniel Essex, and the first mission sends them to rescue Essex from Trask.
In IGN's preview, Team X is Wolverine, Sabretooth and Mystique, led by their mentor Nathaniel Essex, and the first mission sends them to rescue Essex from Trask.[15] The same preview named Troy Baker as Essex, Nicole Pacent as Mystique and Brett Gipson as Sabretooth.[15] The missions move between the jungles of Telambang, the Canadian wilderness, the island nation of Madripoor and Shinjuku in Japan.[25][2] Between missions Logan can walk around one social hub, the Princess Bar in Madripoor's Lowtown, run by Tyger.[22]
Gameplay
Logan fights up close with his adamantium claws and kicks, closes distance with a pounce, and relies on parries and dodges, while stealth lets him stalk enemies, ambush them from above and take them down quietly.[1] His Enhanced Senses track enemies, scents and sounds.[1] Special Techniques deal heavy damage and break barriers, and passive Adaptations add abilities such as deflecting bullets or frightening attackers.[25]
Claws, kicks and techniques Liam McIntyre walks through the combat in the official Game Features trailer: pounces, claw combos, kicks, stealth takedowns, Special Techniques and Adaptations.
A Rage meter fills from attacks, parries and kills and has three tiers.[1] The second tier unlocks Last Stand, a move that spends Rage to restart Logan's healing factor when he goes down, and the third turns the screen black, white and red, a look Insomniac based on Marvel's "Black, White and Blood" comics, and makes his attacks far stronger.[1][22] The healing factor regenerates Logan's health, but, as the Game Features trailer puts it, he "isn't immortal".[25] Daly told Game Informer that constant regeneration was tried and dropped because it encouraged players to slow fights down, which led to Last Stand.[29]
Rage and the healing factor The Game Features trailer explains the three tiers of Rage and the healing factor that keeps Logan resilient but not immortal.
Jean Grey fights beside Logan in parts of the story, using telekinesis and joining him in cooperative finishers.[1] Trask's Ability Inhibitors block Logan's abilities and healing until they are destroyed.[22] Suits, crafted from materials found in the levels, raise Logan's maximum health, and New Game Plus was on the disc at launch with a higher level cap and exclusive techniques and adaptations.[25][30] A Nightmare Cabin in Logan's mind replays missions and timed Nightmare Trials, which unlock memories of his past.[25][22] The accessibility menu lets players set enemy health, enemy damage and stealth awareness separately, slow the game to as little as 30% speed, skip puzzles and choose how much blood, dismemberment and visible healing to show.[18]
At launch the game drew glowing scent trails toward objectives and collectibles, which were widely mocked.[29] Daly said the aim was that "if Logan could smell or hear something relevant, the player could see it too".[29] Hotfix 1.001.005 made the trails fainter, update 1.001.006 on Sep 28, 2026 added switches for the trails to optional collectibles, and update 1.002.001 on Oct 6, 2026 let players toggle the story trails as well.[31][32][33]
Reception
Marvel's Wolverine received mixed to positive reviews.[4][34] As of Nov 8, 2026 it holds a Metascore of 75 from 149 critics, 62% of them positive, and a Metacritic user score of 6.7 from 5,962 ratings.[4] OpenCritic gives it a Top Critic Average of 76, with 62% of critics recommending it.[34]
IGN's verdict Simon Cardy's summary in IGN's 6/10 review: "okay, just a step or two below Insomniac's other superhero efforts", carried by its story while its combat wears thin.
Game Informer's Matt Miller gave it 8.5 out of 10 and a "Must Play" badge, writing that "like Logan himself, it nails the vitals where it counts".[23] IGN's Simon Cardy gave it 6 out of 10, calling it "okay, just a step or two below Insomniac's other superhero efforts", praising the story and the performance of Jean Grey's actress while finding that the combat wore thin across a "15-hour string of missions".[35] GameSpot also gave it 6, and Video Games Chronicle's headline said uninspired gameplay left Logan "feeling declawed despite a strong narrative".[34][36] IGN found the bosses "surprisingly few".[35] On length, IGN's reviewer finished every trophy after about 20 hours, and Giant Bomb's review noted that the PS5 counted 13 hours for the main story, about what the Spider-Man games' stories took.[35][37]
Skill Up does not recommend it Skill Up opens his review by saying he does not recommend the game and blames hand-holding: Logan stating his objective aloud and the glowing scent line in a linear game.
The YouTube critic Skill Up was harsher, opening his review with "I do not recommend Marvel's Wolverine" and blaming a design that he said treats the player as unable to find the way through a linear level.[38] Wolverine is the lowest-rated of Insomniac's Marvel games on Metacritic, where Marvel's Spider-Man scores 87 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 scores 90.[5][6][4]
Sales
Circana's Mat Piscatella reported that Marvel's Wolverine was the best-selling game in the US in September 2026, with the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 in February 2024.[3] PS5 hardware dollar sales in the US rose 43% from a year earlier that month.[3] In the UK it opened at No. 1 on the boxed chart for the week ending Sep 19, 2026, about 60% below the boxed launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.[39] Sony had not announced a sales figure as of Nov 8, 2026.[3] The analysts at Alinea Analytics estimated about 1.9 million copies in its first three days and about 2.5 million on PS5 by mid-October 2026; these are estimates, not sales data.[40][41]
Place in the series
Marvel's Wolverine is Insomniac's fourth Marvel game, after Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023), and the first not to star Spider-Man.[10][5][42][6] Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold more than 2.5 million copies in 24 hours and passed 10 million in under four months.[43][44] All three Spider-Man games later came to PC, Spider-Man 2 on Jan 30, 2025, when Insomniac said it had "no additional story content planned" for that game.[45][46] Wolverine's ending includes a post-credits scene that sets up a future threat, which press coverage read as the opening for a sequel.[47][10]
What is not known
As of Nov 8, 2026, Sony and Insomniac had announced no downloadable content, no expansion, no sequel and no PC version.[7][29] Sony had published no sales figure, and the exact hour the game unlocked on launch day was never announced.[3][1] The full voice cast has not appeared in any PlayStation Blog post; only Liam McIntyre has been named by Sony.[9][15]
What we think
This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.
No story DLC, but free suits
We expect Marvel's Wolverine to get no story DLC, paid or free, in its first year. We expect Insomniac to add at least one new suit in a free update instead.
Why: Insomniac said of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 that it had no additional story content planned and kept that game going with free updates such as New Game Plus and new suits. Wolverine already shipped its post-game on the disc at launch: New Game Plus, the Nightmare Trials and a mind cabin that replays every mission. Its four patches by Oct 6, 2026 show a team still at work on it, and suits are one of the game's main rewards, since each one raises Logan's health.
Jean Grey becomes playable in the sequel
We expect the next game set in Marvel's Wolverine's world to let players control Jean Grey for at least part of its story. We think Insomniac will treat her the way it treated Miles Morales, as the second hero of the series.
Why: Insomniac's Spider-Man series went from one playable hero to two in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. In Wolverine Jean already fights beside Logan with telekinesis and joins him in cooperative finishers, and reviews that disliked the combat still praised her performance as the heart of the story.
Charles Xavier arrives on screen
We expect the next game in this world to introduce Charles Xavier as a character on screen, and with him the beginnings of the X-Men.
Why: Wolverine is set before the X-Men exist, and its director said there are no X-Men to help Logan. A prequel that builds the mutant world without its most famous team only makes sense to us as setup, and Xavier is the character who gathers that team in the comics.
Logan turns up in Insomniac's next Spider-Man game
We expect Logan to appear, at least in a cameo, in Insomniac's next Spider-Man game, whatever it is called.
Why: Wolverine is set in the same universe as the Spider-Man games and refers to their events on its billboards and skylines, while keeping Spider-Man himself off screen. We think that restraint was saved for a payoff, and a New York game is where it fits.
A free update adds new Nightmare Trials
We expect a free update to add new Nightmare Trials or a similar scored challenge mode, such as a boss rush, before the end of 2027.
Why: The Nightmare Trials are the game's only scored, replayable mode, ranked up to Adamantium, and the obvious place to extend a linear game without new story. Critics found the bosses few, so we think a mode that lets players fight them again on harder terms is the cheapest way to answer that.
A PC version comes, but not soon
We expect Marvel's Wolverine to be released on PC, but not before 2028, a longer wait than Marvel's Spider-Man 2 had between its PlayStation 5 and PC releases.
Why: All three of Insomniac's Spider-Man games reached PC. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Sony would not bring single-player PS5 exclusives including Wolverine to PC, while its sources said those plans were constantly evolving. We think the policy delays the port rather than cancels it.
Sony's first sales figure starts with a 4 or a 5
We expect Sony's first official sales figure for Marvel's Wolverine, when it comes, to be between 4 and 6 million copies, and we expect it before the end of Sep 2027.
Why: Circana ranked it the best-selling game in the US in September 2026, with the best launch month in dollars for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2, and Alinea Analytics estimated about 2.5 million copies by mid-October. We think Sony waits for a round number before speaking.
The Metascore holds at 74 to 76
We expect Marvel's Wolverine's Metascore to read between 74 and 76 in March 2027.
Why: It read 75 from 149 critics on Nov 8, 2026. With that many reviews in, we think a few late ones can move the average by a point at most.
Going linear was right; the scent trails were not
We think the decision to make Wolverine a linear game was right, and that the reviews punished the hand-holding more than the structure. We think a Logan who smells his way through a corridor that has only one exit makes the player feel led, and that Insomniac's own patches, which first dimmed the trails and then let players switch them off, concede the point.
Why: Skill Up's widely watched review blamed the scent line and the spoken objectives rather than the levels, and Mike Daly told Game Informer the trails were meant to show what Logan could smell or hear, not to guide. The game's best-received parts, its story and its two lead performances, depend on the tight pacing a linear game allows.
Jean Grey is the reason to play
We think the Logan and Jean story is the best thing Insomniac has written, better than either Spider-Man game, and the reason to play Wolverine even for players who tire of its fights. We think the sequel should be built around the two of them.
Why: Even IGN's 6 out of 10 review singled out Jean's actress as the anchor of the story's emotional weight, and Game Informer's 8.5 rested on the story. GamingBolt called it one of the most tightly knit narratives Insomniac has told.
What others predict
Predictions made on video by creators, experts or the subject of this page, in their words, each linked at the second it is said. The one line after each is our view. When the facts are known we add the result, right or wrong.
IGN: the next game is Wolverine 2 or an X-Men game
"[He] will return in the sequel to Marvel's Wolverine, whether that ultimately takes the form of Wolverine 2 or a full-fledged X-Men game." (YouTube's automatic captions; IGN is speaking of the character in the post-credits scene, whose name is left out here to keep the ending unspoiled)
Our view: We think IGN is right that a sequel is coming and that the post-credits character is in it, and we expect it to be called Wolverine rather than X-Men.
Skill Up: Marvel swings behind the X-Men
"With the next Avengers movies feeling like a farewell tour, the weight of the machine is surely about to swing in behind the Professor and his merry band of misfits." (YouTube's automatic captions)
Our view: We think he is right, and that it raises the odds of Sony putting the X-Men, not just Logan, at the center of the next game.
IGN's Beyond: special suits will come
"They'll do that for Wolverine, right? Don't get me wrong. Like, they will absolutely be like, 'Hey guys, like, here's this special suit for this thing.'" (YouTube's automatic captions)
Our view: We think the host is right that free suits will come, as our own prediction says, though we would not bet on one tied to a particular film.
