Overview

Fable is an open-world action role-playing game in which the player becomes a Hero in the land of Albion, a world where, in the store's words, reputation is everything.[1] Playground Games, a British studio known for the Forza Horizon racing series, is making it with a team separate from the one that builds those games.[2] Xbox Game Studios publishes it.[1] The game is played alone: Playground's own answers to common questions state that it has no multiplayer.[2] Ralph Fulton, the game's general manager and director, describes it as neither a remake nor a sequel but a new beginning for the series, made to keep the heart and humor of the original trilogy.[6] Playground estimates that the main story takes around 15 to 20 hours, with another 15 to 20 hours of side content, before counting activities such as buying homes and building relationships.[2] As of Nov 7, 2026 the game has not been released.[1]

The Hero fights with sword, bow and magic Captured play from the Developer_Direct of Jan 22, 2026, with the interface on screen: the Hero fights among old statues in a sunny field and in a dim hollow, brawls with a group of enemies in a cave, then draws a bow on a flying foe, while the narrator describes light and heavy combos, finishers and ranged weapons that get past an enemy's guard.

Background: the Fable series

The Fable series was created by Lionhead Studios, a British developer that Microsoft bought on Apr 6, 2006, when the original Fable and its expanded edition, Fable: The Lost Chapters, had sold more than 2 million copies together.[27] Microsoft closed Lionhead in April 2016, which canceled Fable Legends and left the series without a new main game.[28] Playground Games became part of Microsoft Studios on Jun 10, 2018, and Xbox said then that the studio would bring its open-world experience to an entirely new project.[12] That project was revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase of Jul 23, 2020 as Fable, described as a new beginning for the series, developed by Playground for Xbox Series X and Windows 10 and coming to Game Pass.[11] Fulton told Xbox Wire that the team received documents from Lionhead that had been kept in storage, and that one of them, which read "Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy", became a guiding idea for the reboot.[5] He also named British television comedies such as Peep Show, The IT Crowd and The Office as inspirations for its tone.[5]

Development and delays

Playground has presented Fable as the work of a team created specially for it inside the studio.[5] At the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 9, 2024, Xbox announced that Eidos Montreal would support development and gave the game a 2025 release.[13] On Feb 25, 2025, Craig Duncan, then head of Xbox Game Studios, said that Fable would be given more time and would ship in 2026.[14] On Jan 22, 2026, Fulton dated the game for fall 2026 and announced that it would also come to PlayStation 5, the first time a Fable game had been planned for a PlayStation.[6] On May 29, 2026, Xbox moved it again, to February 2027, saying it wanted the game to have "the dedicated moment it deserves".[16] Matt Booty, Xbox's content chief, said on the Official Xbox Podcast that Xbox wanted the game to have "a window of its own".[15] GameSpot noted that the move kept Fable away from Grand Theft Auto VI, then due on Nov 19, 2026, though Booty did not name that game.[15] The exact date, Feb 23, 2027, was announced on Jun 7, 2026.[3]

The 2024 trailer ends on a 2025 date The close of Xbox's trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 9, 2024: the Hero tells Humphry that she is back, a rival Hero vows to fix Albion, and a title card promises the game for 2025, a date later moved twice.

Story and setting

The story begins in the village of Briar Hill, where the player's Hero is a child; Fulton has said this opening covers roughly the first 90 minutes, after which the Hero's powers have emerged and the village, the Hero's grandmother among its people, is turned to stone.[10] The antagonist shown so far is Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, voiced by Hayley Atwell: a former pupil of the Guildmaster Humphry the Golden whose obsession with righting Albion's wrongs has driven her to darkness.[4] The same trailer teased the return of the Jack of Blades, a villain from the 2004 game, without saying what part he plays.[4] The Hero speaks with one of two voices, Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and the cast also includes Matt King as Humphry and Richard Ayoade as Dave the Giant.[3] Fulton has said the plot has stakes but no ticking clock: once the Hero leaves Briar Hill, the player can go almost anywhere and settle into another life first.[5]

Briar Hill and the stranger who turns it to stone The Developer_Direct segment shows the Hero as a child running through the lanes of Briar Hill, explains that heroic powers first appear in a moment of danger, then shows a hooded stranger turning the villagers, the Hero's grandmother among them, to stone.

Fulton calls the reboot's Albion truly open world.[5] Bowerstone returns as the reimagined capital, and in it the Hero can enter every building and buy every house.[31] Humphry has spent his recent years hidden away in the empty halls of the Heroes' Guild.[3] Creatures from the old games come back alongside new ones: the store lists bandits and beasts as well as Hobbes, Balverines and Trolls.[1]

A first sweep across Albion The segment passes over rolling hills, a magical forest, villages and an oversized vegetable patch before arriving at the castle of Bowerstone, as the narrator explains that Albion is open to explore from early in the game.

Combat

Combat keeps the series' three disciplines of Strength, Skill and Will, meaning melee weapons, ranged weapons and magic.[9] Playground calls its system style-weaving: the player can switch among the three at any moment of a fight rather than committing to one.[9] William Kennedy, an associate game director, wrote that players can choose the combat intensity that suits them.[9] Press and creators first played the game at gamescom in late August 2026, in a demo set in a flooded, haunted mine.[8] That build let players equip spells that include Fireball, Lightning, Push, Rush and Befowl, which turns people into chickens; cast on an undead enemy, it produces an undead chicken.[8] Enemies in the demo included the spawning Hollows and the Lantern Keeper, a flying mini-boss with a lantern that ranged weapons hit best.[8] Fulton has said that every enemy has strengths and weaknesses to exploit, and that a creature such as a Hobbe may accidentally hit its own companions.[5]

Reputation, villagers and property

Fulton has said that morality in games has moved on since the original trilogy, which was built around a split between good and evil; in the reboot, deeds that people witness or that the Hero repeats become reputations within a settlement.[5] Fulton's standard example is kicking a chicken: seen often enough, it earns the Hero a reputation as a "Chicken Chaser", and people react according to what they think of that.[5] Different villagers judge the same deed differently, and a Hero who dislikes a reputation can change their behavior or pay the Town Crier to announce a new one.[5] Playground's summary of the idea is that the game will never judge the player, but the people of Albion will.[5]

Morality is not black and white The Developer_Direct segment explains that every action earns the Hero a reputation and that each person in Albion reacts differently, as the Hero walks a village lane and a Chicken Chaser notice appears; it closes on the line that the game will never judge you, but the people of Albion will.

Those people are what Playground calls the Living Population: more than 1,000 non-player characters, each designed by hand after procedural generation produced characters that felt random.[7] Every one is fully voiced, with around 100 actors cast for the population alone, and each has a trait, a home, a job and a daily schedule.[7] The Hero can befriend, employ, marry or kill any of them.[7] The store advertises becoming rich as a landlord or blacksmith, romancing villagers and raising children.[1]

Everyday life in Albion Playground explains that many fans' favorite memories of the old games were about ordinary life with the people of Albion, and that it built that same layer into the reboot, with homes, jobs, romance and marriage.

Platforms, editions and expansion

Fable is due on Xbox Series X|S, on PC through the Xbox app and Steam, on Xbox Cloud and on PlayStation 5, and it is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so one purchase covers Xbox console and PC.[3] It is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from launch.[18] Playground says players will be able to choose between 30 and 60 frames per second.[2] On the US Xbox Store the Standard Edition costs $69.99 and the Premium Edition $99.99, as of Nov 7, 2026.[18][19] The Premium Edition adds up to five days of early access, two armor sets, in-game gifts, a digital artbook and soundtrack, and Fable: Order of the Hero, a story expansion that arrives after launch.[19] Playground describes that expansion as a new region in which the Hero rises to lead a secretive ancient cult; it has no date as of Nov 7, 2026.[20] Fulton called it "coming later next year" in September 2026.[10] A physical Collector's Edition sold out, and Playground says it has no plans to restock it.[2]

Previews and reception

As of Nov 7, 2026 Fable has no reviews or review scores, because it has not been released.[1] The first hands-on reports came from gamescom in August 2026.[8] Windows Central wrote that the reboot finally feels like it has a clear identity.[23] DualShockers called it its most anticipated game of 2027 after playing it.[24] The French site Gameblog was less sure about difficulty, finding that enemies, including the Lantern Keeper, lacked aggression even after it raised the setting.[25] At Xbox FanFest in London in late September 2026, attendees played a combat build running at 60 frames per second on Xbox Series X.[26] Demand showed in the store charts: the Collector's Edition, priced at $199.99, had sold out by Jun 23, 2026, and two listings on eBay asked about four times that price.[21] On Oct 26, 2026, Steam's ranking of the most wishlisted unreleased games placed Fable fourth on the US store, behind Deadlock.[29]

Digital Foundry on the 30-minute gameplay video In its DF Direct Weekly of Jun 15, 2026, Digital Foundry praises the subtle lighting, the detail and the characters in Playground's 30-minute gameplay video, saying the footage settles doubts about whether the racing studio could render people well.

Controversies and criticism

When Playground released a 30-minute gameplay video in June 2026, some viewers said the combat looked too easy.[22] The studio replied that the player in the video had used the Story difficulty, the gentlest way through Albion, and confirmed further difficulty modes.[22] The reboot has no dog companion, one of the most liked features of Fable II and Fable III, and Insider Gaming reported in January 2026 that some of the developers themselves were upset about it.[30] Windows Central's preview framed the launch as a test of what some players call the "Xbox Tax", a meme for skepticism toward Microsoft's games that the writer linked to frustration with the company's recent corporate missteps.[23] The game also arrives during upheaval at Xbox: on Sep 22, 2026, Booty announced 268 job cuts across Microsoft's studios and the merger of Playground and Turn 10 into one studio focused on Forza and Fable.[17] His memo did not say how many of those roles were at Playground and did not change Fable's release date.[17][3]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Order of the Hero arrives before the end of October 2027

We expect Fable: Order of the Hero, the story expansion in the Premium Edition, to be playable by Oct 31, 2027, about eight months after launch.

Why: Ralph Fulton called the expansion "coming later next year" in September 2026, Playground has already shown its key art, and Premium buyers pay $30 more partly for it. Xbox has every reason to ship it before the crowded end of the year rather than in it, the same reasoning it gave for moving the base game out of the fall.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Oct 2027 Made

The Jack of Blades, not Isabel, is the final fight

We think the last enemy the Hero faces in Fable's main story is the Jack of Blades, with Isabel revealed as his instrument rather than the true villain.

Why: Xbox introduced Isabel as a Hero driven to darkness by her obsession with righting Albion's wrongs, a fallen pupil rather than a monster, while it teased the Jack of Blades' return and kept his role secret. Holding back the series' most famous villain while marketing the game this heavily points to a late twist, and a tagline of "Fairytale Ending Not Guaranteed" leaves room for a villain who can be saved.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Mar 2027 Made

A dog comes back after launch

Our prediction is that Fable gets a dog companion before the end of 2027, in Order of the Hero or a free update.

Why: The dog was one of the best-loved parts of Fable II and Fable III, and Insider Gaming reported that some of Playground's own developers were upset that it was cut. A feature cut for time rather than for design is the kind that returns once a studio has time, and an expansion is that time.

Prediction Confidence: Long shot Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Fable lands in the low to mid 80s

We expect Fable's Metacritic score on its main platform to land between 80 and 86.

Why: The previews were warm but not unanimous: Windows Central found a clear identity and DualShockers made it its most anticipated game of 2027, while Gameblog found the enemies passive even on a higher setting and viewers called the combat too easy in June 2026. That mix reads as a well-liked game praised for its world and humor and argued over for its combat, not a 90-plus landmark.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Mar 2027 Made

The villagers matter more than the combat

We think the Living Population, not style-weaving combat, is the best thing in Fable and the reason it will be remembered: no other big open-world role-playing game lets the player befriend, employ, marry or kill every one of more than 1,000 hand-made, fully voiced people.

Why: Playground built each of its 1,000-plus villagers by hand after procedural generation felt random, cast around 100 actors for them alone, and gave each a trait, a home, a job and a schedule. The combat previews, by contrast, are good but divided. Playground's own research found that fans remembered the everyday life of the old games most, and that is where the reboot has spent its effort.

WolfheartFPS: Isabel can be talked round

WolfheartFPS , at 7:45 Check by: Mar 2027

"she clearly wasn't always like that. So, maybe there's some choice consequence involved with her where we the players can convince her of taking a new path" (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he may be right: it fits our own prediction that the Jack of Blades, not Isabel, is the last enemy.

Matty Slop: a crowded February

Matty Slop , at 8:46 Check by: Mar 2027

"I do not think Fable will be standing head and shoulders above everyone else like it's the only big RPG there." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right, since our own call is a score in the low to mid 80s, enough to do well on Game Pass and Steam but not to dominate the month.
