Football Manager 27

Football Manager 27 (FM27) is a football management game developed by Sports Interactive and published by SEGA, scheduled for release on Nov 10, 2026 on PC and Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, mobile through Netflix and Apple Arcade.[^1][^2][^25] It follows the cancellation of Football Manager 25 in February 2025 and the poorly received Football Manager 26, and it adds Tactical Effectiveness, Tactical Tweaks, a rebuilt interface and a multiplayer draft mode.[^5][^13][^23][^20] As of Nov 7, 2026 it is not yet released, but PC and Mac players could play it free from Oct 29 to Nov 3, 2026, and early critic reviews give it a Metascore of 82.[^1][^31]

Overview

Football Manager 27, often shortened to FM27, is the 2026 to 2027 entry in Football Manager, a series in which the player runs a football club, setting tactics and training, signing players and reacting during matches that the game simulates.[16][17] Sports Interactive, a London studio founded in 1994 by the brothers Paul and Oliver Collyer, develops it, and SEGA, which bought the studio in April 2006, publishes it.[33][2] It is the second game in the series made with the Unity engine, after Football Manager 26, which the studio called the first of its games built that way.[8] Its announced additions center on tactics (Tactical Effectiveness and Tactical Tweaks), a rebuilt interface, a fuller match-day presentation and Shuffle Draft, a multiplayer mode made with FIFAe, FIFA's digital tournament circuit.[15][16][17][19][20] As of Nov 7, 2026 the game is three days from release, and a paid Launch Preview is open to PC and Mac players who pre-purchased it and to Game Pass subscribers.[1][22]

Background: the canceled Football Manager 25

SEGA and Sports Interactive announced Football Manager 25 on Sep 30, 2024 for release on Nov 26, 2024, as the first game of the series to move to Unity.[6] Studio director Miles Jacobson described it then as only the starting point for the studio's next 20 or 30 years.[6] On Oct 10, 2024 the studio pushed it to March 2025, saying it had been rushing too much and was in danger of compromising its usual standards.[7] It was delayed twice in all before Sports Interactive canceled it on Feb 7, 2025.[5] The studio explained that, nearing key milestones around the turn of the year, it had become unmistakably clear the game would fall short of the required standard even on the later date, and that the overall player experience and the interface in particular were not where they needed to be.[5] Pre-orders were refunded.[5] The series therefore went from Football Manager 2024 straight to Football Manager 26, and FM27 counts those two as its previous titles when it imports saves.[8][22]

Football Manager 26 and its launch

Football Manager 26 came out on Nov 4, 2025 on PC, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation 5, Apple Arcade and Netflix, with a Nintendo Switch version of Football Manager 26 Touch following on Dec 4.[8] It added the Premier League with licensed club logos, kits and player photos, and it was the series' debut for women's football.[9] It sold quickly: SEGA Sammy told investors on Nov 7, 2025 that sales were about 30% above Football Manager 2024's, the fastest pace in the series' history, and the game topped the European sales chart in its launch week.[10][11] Its reception was poor. A day after launch PCGamesN counted 22% positive among more than 2,000 English Steam reviews, noted that heat maps and international management were missing, and reported that SteamDB ranked it the second-worst-rated release of 2025.[12] SEGA Sammy put the criticism down mainly to the engine change and the redesigned interface, plus weak translations in some languages and bugs.[10] As of Nov 7, 2026 its English Steam reviews read Mostly Negative, 38% positive of 9,464, and its PC Metascore is 68 from 44 critics.[13][14]

Development and announcement

In a review of Football Manager 26 published on May 11, 2026, Jacobson wrote that the game had failed to meet the expectations of many players and that he took full responsibility for it.[4] He accepted that the interface changes had not been well received, named immersion as the main focus for what came next, and said the fixes made since launch would not have been possible without the move to Unity.[4] The same post brought international management back to Football Manager 26 as a free update on May 26, 2026.[4] Sports Interactive confirmed Football Manager 27 for November 2026 on Aug 27, 2026, when community manager Chris Groves said the studio was evolving the existing design while restoring ideas and behaviors that players valued.[3] The release date and platforms followed on Sep 29, 2026, with a list of coming reveals that included navigation, Cup Draws, Transfer Deadline Day and match-day upgrades.[2] The studio then set out the game in feature deep dives through late September and October.[15][19][20]

Interface, tactics and training

The interface was rebuilt around a main navigation bar with six sections: Portal, Squad, Tactics, Recruitment, Training and Club.[15] Keyboard shortcuts can be edited in the preferences, bookmarks can be labeled and dragged into a new order, and a recruitment control panel gathers staff advice, budgets, a recruitment focus and the scouting range and budget in one place.[15]

The new navigation bar Sports Interactive's Sep 22, 2026 interface deep dive, on a development build, walks through the six-section navigation bar, its drop-down menus and landing screens, swappable tiles, editable shortcuts and labeled bookmarks.

Tactical Effectiveness, which grows out of the older Tactical Familiarity, measures how well a squad understands and can carry out the manager's plan, from four inputs: Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-In and Next Match Information.[17] A companion measure, Tactical Complexity, lets simple plans work quickly but with a lower ceiling, while busier tactics take longer to learn and can pay off more over time.[17] Training drops the old Units system for setups aimed at executing the plan for the next match, such as pressing high or defending in a low block.[17] On the touchline, Tactical Tweaks are one-press changes, from asking for more urgency or a reduced press to sending the goalkeeper up for a late attack, and Shouts were rebuilt to act on players' mental state instead of giving small attribute boosts.[16]

Tactical Effectiveness explained From Sports Interactive's Oct 9, 2026 deep dive: the Tactical Effectiveness gauge and the four inputs that drive it, Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-In and Next Match Information.

Match engine and match day

For the match engine, Sports Interactive combined clips of real matches from Hawk-Eye Innovations with motion capture to make new animations and skill moves, and used Hawk-Eye data to correct how fast players accelerate and turn on runs.[16] The new skill moves include body feints, elasticos and heel chops, and players with high Flair and Dribbling attempt more of them.[16] Pass Maps return in the post-match Data Hub, and Heat Maps and Action Zones can be viewed during matches.[16]

Hawk-Eye data in the match engine Sports Interactive's Oct 5, 2026 deep dive shows the reworked running and acceleration built from Hawk-Eye data, new skill moves tied to Flair, and the returning in-match analysis.

The match-day presentation was reworked as well. Crowds wear home shirts and wave club flags, stadiums offer a wider range of stands, corners and roofs, and a time-of-day system shifts light and weather through the 90 minutes, so a winter match can kick off in daylight and finish under floodlights.[19] Rain makes the pitch look wet, snow can settle during play, and pre-match cutscenes change their camera angles with the competition, the stadium and the importance of the game.[19]

A fuller match day Sports Interactive's Sep 30, 2026 deep dive shows the new crowds in home colors, stadium stands and roofs, changing light through a match, wet and snowy pitches, and the pre-match cutscenes.

The football world and Shuffle Draft

Cup draws, hosted by a presenter, and Transfer Deadline Day come back, and a Continue Flow setting with Streamlined, Balanced, Comprehensive and Custom options decides how often the game stops to show news.[18] In negotiations, young players now weigh playing time much more heavily, and scout reports show any sell-on fee in a player's contract, which raises the asking price.[18] France's Arkema Première Ligue and the ROSHN Saudi League join as fully licensed leagues, listed alongside the Premier League.[21] Shuffle Draft, developed in partnership with FIFAe, reimagines the Fantasy Draft mode of older games.[20] Between 2 and 32 managers draft squads from sets of 20 players, in private or public online lobbies or offline with AI managers filling the places, and then play a knockout cup, a group stage with knockouts, or a league of up to 20.[20]

A first Shuffle Draft The creator Omega Luke tries Shuffle Draft in the Launch Preview on Nov 1, 2026, picking players from the sets passed around the room in a draft against AI managers.

Release, platforms and price

All digital versions are scheduled for Nov 10, 2026, and a physical PlayStation 5 edition follows on Nov 20, 2026.[1][19] The game comes in four products: FM27 for PC and Mac on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Xbox PC app; FM27 Console on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox handheld devices and PlayStation 5; FM27 Mobile on iOS and Android, only through Netflix; and FM27 Touch on Apple Arcade for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.[1][25] It is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass and Game Pass on console from launch.[2] There is no version for Nintendo Switch, which had received Football Manager 26 Touch, or for Xbox One; the studio said it dropped both to concentrate on the game's quality on the remaining platforms.[8][15] The PC and Mac game costs $59.99, £49.99 or €59.99, with 10% off for anyone who pre-purchases before launch.[22][26] Its Steam page lists Denuvo anti-tamper protection.[26]

The free Launch Preview

The Launch Preview replaces what earlier games called the Beta or Advanced Access, and the studio said it was meant to be closer in quality to the finished game than previous early builds.[22] From 6pm GMT on Oct 29 to 6pm GMT on Nov 3, 2026, it was free for every PC and Mac player on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store and Game Pass, with all modes open, no limit on time or progress, and saves that carry into the full game.[1][22] SEGA said making an annual title free to play this way was believed to be an industry first, and Jacobson called it "the ultimate try-before-you-buy".[23][24] Sports Interactive described the free period as "a tangible example" of its commitment to rebuilding player trust and confidence in the studio.[22] Kotaku read it as a response to Football Manager 26, headlining that the last game was "so hated" that the studio was letting people play the new one for free.[27] FM27 was the tenth best seller on Steam worldwide in the week of Oct 27 to Nov 3, 2026, as SteamDB reported the chart.[30] A small update on Nov 2 fixed a UEFA squad registration fault, and the studio said its first post-launch update would look at the 3D match engine, including defending and pressing.[29]

Why the preview is free The creator WorkTheSpace reads Sports Interactive's answer on why FM27 is free to play for a limited time, including its line about rebuilding trust, and says he cannot fault the decision.

Reception

Before release, FM Scout compared the studio's reveals with six common complaints about Football Manager 26 and rated three of them fixed and three partly fixed, while noting that bugs could not be judged until people played the game.[28] Critic reviews started to appear the week before launch. Multiplayer.it gave the PC version 7.5 out of 10 on Nov 4, 2026, calling it a clear step forward from Football Manager 26 with deeper tactics and a better match-day atmosphere, but faulting defenders who sometimes stand nearly still and an interface it still found cumbersome in the first hours.[32] As of Nov 7, 2026, Metacritic gives the PC version a Metascore of 82 from seven critic reviews, all of them positive, compared with 68 for Football Manager 26.[31][14] Players had not yet scored it: Metacritic shows no user score and the Steam page shows no user reviews before the Nov 10 release.[31][26]

A creator's verdict on the preview build DoctorBenjy FM, after playing a pre-release build, says FM27 builds on FM26 rather than adding much that is new and that some screens still waste space at some resolutions, then judges it better than both FM26 and FM24.

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Steam players forgive FM27 within a month

We expect FM27's English Steam reviews to read Mostly Positive or better on Dec 10, 2026, a month after release. We think the free week did the filtering that Football Manager 26's launch never had.

Why: Football Manager 26 still reads Mostly Negative, 38% positive of 9,464 English reviews, a year after release, and players blamed its interface and bugs. FM27 rebuilt the navigation, brought back the missing features, and let every PC and Mac player try a near-final build free for five days before paying, so most people who buy it have already chosen it. Early critics agree: a Metascore of 82 from seven reviews on Nov 7, 2026, against 68 for FM26.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Dec 2026 Made

Football Manager 28 gets a free week too, and so does a rival

We expect Sports Interactive to repeat the free Launch Preview for Football Manager 28 in the fall of 2027, open to every PC and Mac player before launch. We think at least one other publisher of a yearly sports game copies the idea by the end of 2027.

Why: SEGA called a free annual title of this kind an industry first, the studio tied it to rebuilding trust, and FM27 reached Steam's global top ten sellers in the free week, before it was even out. A studio that has found a trial that sells does not take it away a year later, and a yearly sports series is the genre where a buyer most wants to know whether this year's game is worth the upgrade.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Set pieces are Football Manager 28's headline

We think Football Manager 28's first feature deep dive is a rebuilt set-piece system: a new set-piece creator and set-piece coaches who matter more. We expect it to be sold as the touchline control this year's game started with Tactical Tweaks, carried to corners and free kicks.

Why: FM27's deep dives covered the interface, tactics, training, the match engine, match day, the football world and Shuffle Draft, and none of them touched set pieces. Sports Interactive has fixed one big area per deep dive this cycle, and its first post-launch update already names the match engine's defending and pressing as the focus, which is where set-piece defending lives.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Oct 2027 Made

Shuffle Draft gets a FIFAe competition

We expect Shuffle Draft to get an official competitive layer run with FIFAe during 2027: a ranked ladder, a FIFAe tournament, or both. We think an esports partner did not sign up for a mode that is only private lobbies and evenings with friends.

Why: Sports Interactive built Shuffle Draft in partnership with FIFAe, FIFA's digital tournament circuit, with public lobbies and events of up to 32 managers, but it had announced no rankings, prizes or tournaments as of Nov 7, 2026. The 2 to 32 manager cup format is already the shape of a bracket.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Tactical Effectiveness matters more than the new interface

We think Tactical Effectiveness is FM27's most important change, more than the rebuilt navigation the studio led with. Our view is that the interface only undoes FM26's mistake, while Tactical Effectiveness fixes a problem the series has had for twenty years: a player could never see why a tactic was failing.

Why: Tactical Effectiveness names four inputs (Tactical Understanding, Player Ability, Player Buy-In and Next Match Information) and shows them on the tactics, training and recruitment screens, and Tactical Complexity spells out the cost of a busy plan. The first critic review, Multiplayer.it's, singled out the tactics as the game's most convincing part while still calling the interface cumbersome.

WorkTheSpace: a day-one patch

WorkTheSpace , at 9:33 Check by: Nov 2026

"There will be some kind of day one patch to I assume fix some issues that will pop up with so many people playing this game now." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right, and the studio has as good as confirmed it: its Nov 2 post promises an update to support the full launch, then a first post-launch update aimed at the match engine.

Zealand: FM26 was the beta

Zealand , at 9:45 Check by: Dec 2026

"We're getting FM27 and kind of the way I predicted it. FM26 was basically a really long beta test for Football Manager in Unity, and now it seems like we're getting a more complete game." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think the critics' early scores bear him out, and that Steam's players will decide whether a beta should have cost full price.

Clayts: modders bring back stadium images

Clayts , at 5:51 Check by: Mar 2027

"I'm sure somebody clever will bring that back at some point." (YouTube's automatic captions)

Our view: We think he is right within a few months of launch, once the editors and modding tools for FM27 are out.
