Overview
Persona 4 Revival is a remake of Persona 4 Golden, the expanded 2012 version of Atlus's 2008 role-playing game Persona 4.[3][17] Atlus describes it as a full remake that leaves the original storyline untouched while renewing the whole experience of playing it.[3] The story is set in Inaba, a quiet rural town, where a transfer student's routine is broken by a series of strange murders and a mysterious television channel that awakens his Persona power.[2] Atlus's P-Studio develops it, and SEGA publishes it.[2][5] It was revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 8, 2025 and dated a year later at the same event, on the night SEGA also announced Persona 6.[2][1] As of Nov 7, 2026 the game is not out and no critic has reviewed the finished version; only hands-on previews of an early section have been published.[10][11][12]

Background: Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden
Persona 4 first came out on the PlayStation 2, reaching North America on Dec 9, 2008 under the name Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, and it holds a Metacritic score of 90 from 47 critics.[18] Persona 4 Golden, an expanded edition for the PlayStation Vita, followed in North America on Nov 20, 2012 and scored 93 on Metacritic from 61 critics, as of Nov 7, 2026.[17] Golden was announced and released on Steam on the same day, Jun 13, 2020, at $19.99, which made it the first main Persona game on a platform outside PlayStation.[19] On Jan 19, 2023 it reached PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox consoles and Game Pass with remastered graphics, adjustable difficulty and a suspend save.[20] Its later scores are lower than the Vita original's: 87 on PC, 86 on PlayStation 4, 89 on Xbox Series X and 90 on Switch.[17] Revival is built from Golden rather than from the 2008 game, so Golden's additions, among them the Velvet Room resident Marie, are part of it.[3][10]
Development
Kazuhisa Wada of P-Studio leads the project, and he made the game's first public statement when it was revealed.[2] Atlus framed the choice to remake Golden in full as the next step after Persona 3 Reload, saying it had put all of its effort into a complete remake and applied what it learned on that game.[7] Wada told RPG Site that Persona 3 Reload was the studio's first project in Unreal Engine, made while the team was still learning the engine, and that Revival let it improve on that work.[8] The team kept the story in the late 2000s rather than updating it, because the period's shift from tube televisions to flat screens and from analog to digital broadcasting is part of the game's identity.[8] Art director Akane Kabayashi said the battle interface uses an old television dial to push the TV theme further.[8] Character designer Shigenori Soejima said the cast now has full human proportions, and Wada said the anime studio MAPPA was eager to make the game's animated scenes.[9]

Announcement and release
Atlus revealed the remake on Jun 8, 2025 at the Xbox Games Showcase with no release date, naming Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Game Pass first and promising PlayStation 5 and Steam versions.[2] Later that month GamesRadar+ reported that SEGA had placed it no earlier than April 2026.[23] Store pages for Steam and the PlayStation Store opened for wishlists on Jul 17, 2025, and RPG Site reported that the PC version uses Denuvo anti-tamper technology.[22] At the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7, 2026, SEGA dated the game for Feb 18, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one and with Xbox Play Anywhere.[1] As of Nov 7, 2026, Steam lists the release as Feb 17, 2027 and its PC requirements as still to be announced.[5]

A Nintendo Switch 2 version was announced during a Nintendo Direct and is due on May 20, 2027, about three months after the other platforms, as RPG Site reported on Sep 9, 2026.[6] Atlus's Japanese site carries the same date and lists boxed copies only for PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 in Japan.[3] No version for PlayStation 4, Xbox One or the original Switch has been announced.[1][3] Players in Japan can try the game before release: Atlus brought a demo of the opening and of Yukiko's Castle to Tokyo Game Show 2026 and is touring it through electronics stores from Nov 14 to Dec 13, 2026.[21] No demo for home consoles or PC had been announced as of Nov 7, 2026.[21][5]

Gameplay
Revival keeps Persona 4's setting and plot: a transfer student in Inaba, a string of strange murders and a mysterious television channel that awakens his Persona.[2][3] Battles remain turn based, built around striking an enemy's weakness to knock it down, which earns another action, and then attacking all downed enemies together.[4] Atlus has added four new actions.[4] A well-timed guard against a Shadow in a dungeon now stuns it, letting the player strike first or skip the fight.[4] Attacking a Shadow that suffers from a status ailment can knock it into another, damaging both and passing the ailment on.[4] An extra turn can be handed to an ally so that a different weakness can be hit.[4] When a battle gauge fills, the party gets a run of turns in which skills are free and resistances are ignored, ending in a large finishing attack.[4] In RPG Site's preview that run lasted up to four turns.[10] Wada said in July 2026 that the team was still tuning the balance after extensive test play.[9]
Revival's battles Atlus's July 2026 broadcast clip on combat: the party fights Shadows inside the TV world as the new guard, knock-into and hand-off actions and the full-gauge burst of free turns are shown.
Changes and new content
All dialogue is newly recorded, and voice acting now covers the main story, every Social Link event and the added scenes.[4] Atlus has added seasonal events and scenes meant to show more of each character, and Wada said the Social Links themselves are basically unchanged, though full voicing brings out more of the characters' feelings.[4][9] A new feature called Location Episodes sends the protagonist around Inaba with Aika Nakamura to collect photographs of the town's past; handing them to party members opens scenes in which they revisit their memories.[4] After an English broadcast described the new character as a Social Link, Atlus corrected itself and apologized for the confusion.[16] Golden's Marie returns, and RPG Site found that the preview build did not stray far from Golden.[10] One change fans had asked for is absent: Atlus said a romance with Yosuke would mean offering one with every other male character, and Revival does not add it.[15]
Marie's first outing From GameSpot's pre-release footage: Marie, Golden's addition to the Velvet Room, meets Yosuke on an outing and her Social Link begins.
Voice cast and music
The English cast is almost entirely new.[13] On Jun 17, 2026 SEGA named Nazeeh Tarsha as the protagonist, Paul Castro Jr. as Yosuke Hanamura, Anne Yatco as Chie Satonaka, Brianna Knickerbocker as Yukiko Amagi and Ari Thrash as Marie.[14] On Sep 21, 2026 Atlus confirmed that Johnny Yong Bosch, who voiced both the protagonist and Tohru Adachi in the earlier English versions, returns only as Adachi.[13] Atlus said some former actors were unavailable or had left voice work, and Wada said the team decided to start over with a whole new cast.[13] Several original actors, Yuri Lowenthal among them, had said publicly that they wanted to return, and some fans asked why Bosch alone came back.[13]
Adachi in Revival Atlus's September 2026 broadcast introduces Tohru Adachi, Dojima's junior partner, the one English role kept by its original actor.
The soundtrack is by Ryota Kozuka of the Atlus Sound Team, who remixes Shoji Meguro's original music and adds new songs, with vocals by Shiori Sasaki.[4] Wada said the aim was to keep the nostalgia while making the music sound fresh, and he praised Sasaki's English pronunciation.[9]

Editions
SEGA sells a Standard Edition at £64.99, a Digital Deluxe Edition at £74.99 and a Digital Premium Edition at £84.99, as of its Jun 7, 2026 announcement.[1] The upgrades add costumes, Personas from Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal, and, in Premium, music packs from those games; none adds story or early play.[5] A physical Collector's Edition at £244.99 includes an artbook, a SteelBook case, keycaps and a keychain, and a statue of the protagonist with his Persona, Izanagi.[1] Pre-orders placed by 23:59 Eastern on Feb 17, 2027 receive a set of extra background music from Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal, according to Steam.[5] The Steam version offers English and 14 other languages and uses Denuvo anti-tamper technology.[5]
Previews and expectations
Three English-language outlets played about an hour of a pre-release build in August and September 2026, and all three were positive.[10][11][12] James Galizio of RPG Site, who played on an Xbox Series X development kit, called Revival an already confident and stylish remake, praised the free camera and the new facial animation, and questioned how the flashing light of the full-gauge attack would affect photosensitive players.[10] He had been disappointed that Persona 3 Reload sold its epilogue content separately and judged that Revival avoids the problem, because Golden's story additions are woven through the whole game.[10] GamesRadar+ called it the best-looking Persona game so far, and PC Gamer wrote that it feels as good as the original did 16 years earlier.[11][12] Wider expectations rest on the series: SEGA said on Jun 7, 2026 that Persona had sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.[1]

What we think
This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.
Golden's whole story ships in the box
We expect every story addition Persona 4 Golden made, the winter epilogue and its extra dungeon included, to be in Persona 4 Revival's base game on Feb 18, 2027. We expect no paid story add-on for Revival to be announced in its first year, so its paid extras stay costumes, Personas and music.
Why: Atlus calls Revival a full remake of Golden, Marie is already confirmed, and RPG Site found the preview build close to Golden. Golden's additions run through the whole year rather than sitting at the end, which is why RPG Site judged they could not be split off the way Persona 3 Reload's epilogue was. Every paid edition announced so far adds cosmetics, Personas and music, never story.
A demo reaches home consoles and PC before launch
We expect Atlus to release a free downloadable demo of Persona 4 Revival outside Japan before Feb 18, 2027, covering the opening and Yukiko's Castle, the same slice its Japanese store tour uses.
Why: The demo already exists: Atlus showed it at Tokyo Game Show 2026 and tours it through Japanese electronics stores until Dec 13, 2026, two months before launch. Revival is pitched at newcomers who never played a 2008 game, and day one on Game Pass puts it in front of subscribers who may want a free taste of a slow-burning school-life role-playing game first.
Critics land just below Golden
We expect Persona 4 Revival's PlayStation 5 Metascore to land between 86 and 90, below the Vita original's 93 but in the range of Golden's later ports.
Why: Golden scored 93 on Vita in 2012, but its re-releases scored 86 to 90 once critics had already played the story, and Revival keeps that story unchanged. All three previews were warm, praising the look and the new battle actions, so a collapse is unlikely; a remake of a famous story rarely surprises critics enough to beat the original.
The original English voices come back as an option
We think the recast will be the loudest argument at launch, and our prediction is that Atlus answers it by adding Persona 4 Golden's English voice track as an option, as a patch or paid add-on, by the end of 2027.
Why: Revival replaced every English voice but Johnny Yong Bosch's, several original actors such as Yuri Lowenthal said publicly that they wanted to return, and fans asked why Bosch alone came back. Golden's English recordings already exist, and Atlus sells music and costumes from its other games as add-ons. Rights and the new voiced scenes make it hard, which is why this is a long shot.
Remaking Golden was the decision that matters most
We think choosing Persona 4 Golden rather than the 2008 game as the base is the most important call Atlus made for Revival, more than the new engine, the new battle actions or the new cast. We think it quietly corrects the biggest complaint about Persona 3 Reload, which remade the original Persona 3 and sold its epilogue separately.
Why: RPG Site's previewer, disappointed by Reload's split, rated Revival more favorably for keeping Golden's content woven through the year. Golden is the version with the 93 Metascore, and Atlus itself says it put all its effort into a full remake after Reload. A Revival built on the PS2 game would have started its launch with a fight about missing content.
What others predict
Predictions made on video by creators, experts or the subject of this page, in their words, each linked at the second it is said. The one line after each is our view. When the facts are known we add the result, right or wrong.
DavidCast JRPGs: Persona 6 in September 2027
"I'm really going to double dip double down on my prediction that I did before, and I'm just going to say it's 2027 September. So, the anniversary date for 30th anniversary of Persona, I think is what they're going for." (YouTube's automatic captions)
Our view: We think Persona 6 comes later, in 2028, because Atlus is busy with Revival's Switch 2 version until May 2027 and has shown no Persona 6 gameplay with a date.
