Enshrouded
Enshrouded is a survival action role-playing game for one player or a co-op group, developed and self-published by Keen Games of Frankfurt am Main and set in Embervale, a voxel kingdom swallowed by a fog called the Shroud.[^1][^2] It spent almost three years in Steam early access before its 1.0 release on Windows and PlayStation 5 on Oct 15, 2026, and an Xbox Series X|S version is planned for spring 2027.[^1][^2] Keen counted more than 5.5 million players by the end of early access, and the PC version of 1.0 holds a Metacritic score of 88 as of Nov 7, 2026.[^2][^18]

Overview
Enshrouded is a survival action role-playing game in which one player or a co-op group explores, fights and builds in Embervale, a kingdom made of voxels and covered by a corrupting fog called the Shroud.[1] Keen Games, an independent studio in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, both develops and publishes it.[1][2] The game entered Steam early access on Windows on Jan 24, 2024 and left it with its 1.0 release on Oct 15, 2026, when it also launched on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.[1][3] Keen has named spring 2027 for an Xbox Series X|S version, without a day.[2][3] By the end of early access Keen counted more than 5.5 million players, and the studio has promised free and paid content for years to come.[2] As of Nov 7, 2026, the PC version of 1.0 holds a Metacritic score of 88 from 15 critic reviews, all of them positive.[18]
A session in Enshrouded 1.0 Keen's 1.0 highlights video shows an ordinary session: a Flameborn sorts loot into a chest in a settlement, a rescued survivor asks for food, a line goes into a sunlit pond, and a fight breaks out with a large, glowing creature in the blue fog of the Shroud.
Setting and premise
The player is a Flameborn, whom Keen describes as the last ember of hope for a dying race, sent to reclaim a fallen land from the fog.[3] Rare treasure and dangerous creatures wait inside the Shroud, and a story of magic and ruin lies beneath the old ruins.[3] The world is handcrafted rather than generated, and every part of it can be dug into and reshaped.[1] Before early access, creative director Antony Christoulakis told Game Rant that the game leans less on story than many role-playing games and that Keen was not trying to make "the next Witcher", but "a world that actually feels like a place".[14] The 1.0 release completed the map with Cinder's Cradle, a northern region of lava below and floating islands above, built by the Ancients.[2][5] The same release concluded the current story, which Keen's changelog calls finished "for now", since the Shroud still lingers and the Fell still want more land.[5]
Gameplay
Enshrouded mixes survival in a hostile land, third-person action combat with loot, and building in a world that can be terraformed anywhere.[1] Players must endure the fog to reach what lies within it, and the Flame Altars at the heart of each base grow stronger as the Flame is upgraded; the final Flame level, added in 1.0, lets altars push the Shroud back.[3][5] Characters have no fixed class: the skill tree lets a player mix melee, ranged and magic abilities.[2] For 1.0 Keen added nine new mage spells, more ways to customize ranged combat, and reworked animations and camera, and it raised the character level cap to 50 and the gear level cap from 50 to 55.[2] The enemy roster grew by 37 new types and variants, 14 of them from a new faction in Cinder's Cradle.[5] On PlayStation 5 the game runs at 60 frames per second in a performance mode or 30 in a quality mode, and the PS5 Pro has a 60 frames per second mode that uses PSSR 2.0.[2]
Combat and the skill tree Keen's combat video, recorded before early access, shows the loop: a fight with a huge creature in the blue fog, a level-up banner, and then the skill tree, a starry web of nodes where each point is spent.
Building, crafting and co-op
Building works block by block: players can carve homes into mountainsides, restore ruined structures or raise whole settlements.[2] Survivors rescued in the world move into a player's base and unlock the workshops that craft weapons and armor.[3] Among the player-suggested changes in 1.0 are Airborne Architect, which lets a builder fly around a base, an auto-loot setting, and chests that can be upgraded in place and named.[2] The game can be played alone or in online co-op with up to 16 players on PC and up to 8 on PlayStation 5.[2] There is no cross-play between the two platforms: Keen's launch FAQ said it was working on cross-platform play but had no estimate of how long it would take.[4] Owners of the early access version did not have to buy the game again, and their saves were converted to a new format, although Keen strongly encouraged them to start a new world because the opening hours had changed.[4]
Player builds in the launch trailer The 1.0 launch trailer gives part of its running time to buildings made by players, each credited by name: a tower among trees, a lantern-lit interior, a bridge to a great stone hall and a cathedral town.
Keen Games and development
Keen Games grew out of Neon Studios, which Christoulakis and Jan Jöckel founded with three friends in 1993 after making games together as schoolboys in Darmstadt; the company took the Keen Games name in 2005.[12] Before Enshrouded it made Anno games for Nintendo systems, the mobile games Royal Revolt and Olympus Rising, and Portal Knights, which 505 Games published in 2016.[11] Enshrouded is the first game Keen published itself, after a 2021 investment from Hiro Capital and Tencent.[11] Keen's about page lists 75 team members as of Nov 7, 2026.[11] Hessenschau reported in May 2025 that the game cost a sum in the double-digit millions of euros, about 2 million of it covered by a state grant.[12] The game runs on Keen's own voxel engine, which the studio says lets players terraform and modify vast open worlds.[2] Christoulakis told Wccftech in October 2026 that Keen had bet the future of the studio on Enshrouded.[13]
Why Keen uses its own engine Julien, Keen's technical director, explains that a world that can be changed everywhere, with a long view distance, a day and night cycle and huge player buildings, is very demanding, which is why Enshrouded runs on Keen's own engine, Holistic.
Early access
Keen revealed Enshrouded on May 3, 2023, and its demo led the list of the most played demos of Steam Next Fest that October.[3][15] Early access opened on Jan 24, 2024 with co-op for up to 16 players; Keen wrote that it had started the project four years earlier.[6] More than a million people played in the first four days.[7] Before 1.0 Keen shipped eight major updates, 14 patches and 42 hotfixes.[2] Among them were the Hollow Halls dungeons in March 2024, the snowy Albaneve Summits with pets and farm animals in November 2024, simulated water and the Veilwater Basin in November 2025, and Forging the Path in April 2026, which overhauled combat, rebuilt the skill tree, added gear upgrades and introduced Adventure Sharing.[27][28][29][30] The full release slipped twice: in August 2024 Keen planned it for 2025 on PC and consoles, in January 2025 it moved it to spring 2026 because the world had grown larger than planned, and in January 2026 it named only an autumn window, declining to give a date after having had to postpone the last one.[8][9][10]
Adventure Sharing arrives Keen's Forging the Path highlights present Adventure Sharing, a section of the main menu for browsing worlds that other players have uploaded and for sharing one's own castles, dungeons and mazes.
The 1.0 release
On Jun 25, 2026 Keen set Oct 15, 2026 as the date of 1.0 on Windows, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, and moved the Xbox Series X|S version to spring 2027.[3] Chief executive Jan Jöckel said the team had worked to launch on every platform together but decided that the Xbox version needed more time to reach the quality and performance Keen expected.[3] The release opened the whole map, adding Cinder's Cradle, two new Hollow Halls, new areas at the edges of older regions and the end of the main quest.[5] It also brought Sparkworks, a logic system for building interactive bases and dungeons to share through Adventure Sharing, voiced lore notes and survivors in English, German and Mandarin Chinese, a renderer for distant terrain and HDR support.[2] The game costs $39.99 or 39.99 euros and launched with a 10% discount for its first 14 days.[2] Steam also sells a Deluxe Upgrade Pack and the soundtrack.[1] Valve rated the game Steam Deck Verified in October 2026, and Keen shipped Patch 1.0.1.0 on Nov 2 and Hotfix 1.0.1.2 on Nov 4, 2026.[22][23][24]
What 1.0 added The 1.0 highlights run through the release: a new enemy faction and tougher variants of the others, a level cap of 50, a new crafting tier, a higher limit on Flame Altars, new building pieces, and a main quest that finally opens structures players had tried to enter for years.
Reception and players
Critics received 1.0 well: as of Nov 7, 2026 Metacritic counted 15 reviews of the PC version, all positive, for a score of 88.[18] GamingBolt gave it 9 out of 10, praising its combat, exploration and building while calling the story little more than an excuse to explore.[19] CGMagazine gave 8.5 out of 10, naming combat the most enjoyable part and faulting the thin story, the missing cross-play, sudden difficulty spikes and a small starting inventory.[20] On Steam, 87% of 52,826 English-language user reviews were positive on Nov 7, 2026, as were 82% of the 5,978 written in the previous 30 days.[1] SteamDB recorded an all-time peak of 160,405 concurrent Steam players on Jan 28, 2024, four days after early access opened, and a 1.0 peak of 113,542 on Oct 18, 2026.[25] Steam reported 32,200 players at 05:58 UTC on Nov 7, 2026, early morning in Europe and night in the Americas.[26] Enshrouded and its studio won four prizes at the German Developer Awards 2024, Studio of the Year among them, and the game took the top prize of the Deutscher Computerspielpreis 2025, worth 100,000 euros.[16][17]
A returning player's view Mortismal Gaming, who had last played at the early access launch, says over his own 1.0 footage that combat is still a little janky but feels better than before, and that its free character and base building are why he enjoyed it.
Comparisons and criticism
Enshrouded has been compared with Valheim, another survival game played in co-op groups.[21] Laptop Mag's comparison of February 2024 found Valheim the harder game, built around teamwork, and Enshrouded the gentler one, with fast travel home and less lost on death, and it recommended Enshrouded to players who mostly play alone.[21] The criticism of 1.0 most often repeated is the lack of cross-play: CGMagazine listed it among the game's faults, and Christoulakis told Wccftech that time had not allowed it but that Keen still wanted to add it in future updates.[13][20] The story drew complaints from GamingBolt and CGMagazine, a weakness Keen had signaled in 2023 when it described Enshrouded as a world to inhabit more than a tale to follow.[14][19][20] Xbox owners have waited longest: Keen planned a console launch on PlayStation and Xbox for 2025, but Xbox is now due in spring 2027, and Christoulakis apologized for the wait while promising a polished release.[3][8][13]
Future plans
Keen's launch announcement commits the studio to supporting Enshrouded with free and paid content for years to come.[2] Christoulakis told Wccftech that 1.0 was not the end of development and that any paid DLC should give players good value.[13] Jöckel called Sparkworks and Adventure Sharing the first steps toward letting players create and share adventures of their own, and said the studio wants to expand them.[2] Keen's Road to Release post of Jan 21, 2026, which set the autumn window for 1.0, said the studio had big plans for the game beyond the release.[10] Voiced lore in more languages is planned.[2] Cross-play between PC and PlayStation 5 remains without an estimate, and the Xbox version has a season but no day.[2][4] Keen's first patch after 1.0 says work on surround sound continues, with more fixes in the next patch.[23]
Another beginning In Keen's Road to Release video of Jan 21, 2026, Christoulakis says 1.0 is another beginning rather than the end, that development will go on for years with free additions and paid expansions, and that there is a world beyond Embervale.

What we think
This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.
Xbox arrives with cross-play, and PlayStation joins later
We expect the Xbox Series X|S version to launch in spring 2027 with cross-play between Xbox and PC from its first day. We think PlayStation 5 joins that cross-play only in a later update, after the Xbox launch.
Why: Keen moved Xbox from the 1.0 date to spring 2027 to reach the quality it wanted, and its launch FAQ says cross-play is in the works with no estimate. Christoulakis told Wccftech that time alone kept cross-play out of 1.0. A late console release is the natural place to ship the feature that critics such as CGMagazine named first among the game's faults, and PC and Xbox share Microsoft's own online services, which makes that pair the easier one to join first.
The first paid expansion leaves Embervale
We expect Keen to announce Enshrouded's first paid expansion before Oct 15, 2027, set in a new land outside Embervale. We think it brings a new enemy faction of its own and continues the story that the full release closed.
Why: Keen promises free and paid content "for years to come", the 1.0 changelog calls the story concluded only "for now", and Christoulakis said in January 2026 that there is a world beyond Embervale. 1.0 paired its new region with a higher level cap and a new faction of 14 enemy types, and it filled the map to its edges, so new ground has to be somewhere else.
Keen-made adventures in Adventure Sharing
We expect Keen to publish official adventures of its own, built with Sparkworks and featured in the Adventure Sharing menu, before the end of 2027. We think Keen also adds a featured or curated list of player-made adventures to that menu in the same period.
Why: Jöckel called Sparkworks and Adventure Sharing the first steps toward letting players make and share adventures, and the part of the game Keen most wants to build on. A finished story and a full map leave player-made content as the cheapest source of new things to do between paid releases, and a studio of 75 people can show what the tools can do faster than it can build a region.
No Steam peak above 1.0's before 2028
We expect no day before Jan 1, 2028 to beat the 1.0 Steam peak of 113,542 concurrent players, not even the launch of the first paid expansion.
Why: SteamDB's all-time peak of 160,405 came in the first week of early access and the 1.0 release, with three years of updates behind it, reached about 71% of that. A paid expansion only reaches owners who buy it, the Xbox and PlayStation versions take players who would otherwise be on Steam, and Steam counted 32,200 players at a quiet hour on Nov 7, 2026, three weeks after launch.
Sparkworks matters more than Cinder's Cradle
We think Sparkworks, not the new region, is the most important thing 1.0 added. In our view Enshrouded's future depends on player-made dungeons more than on anything Keen can build alone.
Why: Cinder's Cradle is finished content that a player clears once, while Sparkworks turns the game's best-reviewed system, its building, into a way to make things for other people to play. GamingBolt found the tools hard to learn without better tutorials, which is the fixable kind of fault, and Keen's own chief executive named them as the part he most wants to grow.
What others predict
Predictions made on video by creators, experts or the subject of this page, in their words, each linked at the second it is said. The one line after each is our view. When the facts are known we add the result, right or wrong.
HackTheMinotaur 2: the sky islands open at 1.0
"But that could change in autumn with the 1.0 release to Enshrouded, giving players a new area to explore." (YouTube's automatic captions)
Our view: We think he read the roadmap art correctly, and that a roadmap picture from Keen is worth taking literally.
Result (): Right. Keen's launch announcement of Oct 14, 2026 describes Cinder's Cradle, added with 1.0 on Oct 15, as "a new biome of floating islands" (Keen Games), and its changelog says the Ancients lifted the earth there into a realm of floating islands (Keen Games).
HackTheMinotaur 2: playing across platforms at launch
"we can reasonably assume it will be easy to play with other players on different platforms considering we can host our own games." (YouTube's automatic captions)
Our view: We think cross-play comes, but later than he assumed, and first between PC and Xbox.
Result (): Wrong. Keen's launch FAQ of Oct 13, 2026 says Enshrouded "will not be cross-platform at launch" and that Keen has "no current estimate" for it (Keen Games); 1.0 launched on PC and PlayStation 5 on Oct 15 without it.
