Overview

ChatGPT is an AI assistant that holds a conversation in ordinary language: it answers questions, writes and edits text, searches the web, reads uploaded files and makes images.[1][3] It is built on OpenAI's GPT family of large language models, part of the wider field of artificial intelligence.[1][7] OpenAI, the company that develops and runs it, was founded in December 2015.[36] As of November 7, 2026, ChatGPT is one app with three modes: Chat for questions and conversation, Work for longer tasks that end in a finished document, spreadsheet or website, and Codex for software development.[2][3] It runs on the web at chatgpt.com, in desktop apps for macOS and Windows with a Linux version in preview, and in apps for iPhone and Android.[31] Anyone can use it without paying, and paid plans in the United States cost from $8 to $500 a month.[4] OpenAI said on October 21, 2026 that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week.[5]

Origins and launch

OpenAI released ChatGPT on November 30, 2022 as a research preview that was free to use.[1] It was fine-tuned from a model in the GPT-3.5 series that had finished training in early 2022, and it learned to converse through reinforcement learning from human feedback, in which people ranked sample answers so the model could learn which replies were better.[1] OpenAI presented it as a sibling of InstructGPT, an earlier model trained to follow instructions, and said the dialogue format let it answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge false premises and turn down inappropriate requests.[1] The same announcement listed its weaknesses, among them answers that sound plausible but are wrong and a habit of being too wordy.[1] Uptake was unusually fast. Analysts at UBS, using data from Similarweb, estimated that ChatGPT had about 100 million monthly users in January 2023, two months after launch.[10] The same report noted that TikTok had needed about nine months to reach that number and Instagram about two and a half years.[10]

Growth from 2023 to 2025

ChatGPT Plus, the first paid plan, arrived on February 1, 2023 at $20 a month, promising access at busy times, faster answers and new features first.[8] GPT-4 reached Plus subscribers on March 14, 2023.[9] ChatGPT Enterprise followed on August 28, 2023, and on November 6, 2023 OpenAI introduced GPTs, custom versions of ChatGPT that anyone could build for a purpose.[19][35] On May 13, 2024, OpenAI made its GPT-4o model available to free users and said more than a hundred million people used ChatGPT each week.[11] A $200 monthly plan, ChatGPT Pro, was added on December 5, 2024.[12] During 2025 the product started doing work as well as answering: deep research wrote long cited reports, and ChatGPT agent, released on July 17, 2025, could operate a computer of its own to finish tasks for the user.[42][34] GPT-5 became the default model for every user on August 7, 2025, with a system that sends each request either to a fast model or to a slower reasoning one.[13] OpenAI reported 800 million weekly users on November 19, 2025.[18]

Chat, Work and Codex

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI rebuilt ChatGPT around three modes and released a new desktop app that holds all of them, replacing both the previous desktop app and the separate Codex app.[2] Chat is the conversational mode, used for quick questions, writing, search, images and voice.[3] Work is an agent for longer, multi-step jobs: given a goal, it plans the steps, searches and reads, uses connected services such as Gmail, Slack or Google Drive through plugins, and hands back a finished file or website rather than a chat reply.[2][3] Codex reads, writes and runs code for software projects.[3] Work and Codex draw on one shared set of usage limits and credits, separate from the limits in Chat.[4] On the Free and Go plans, Work is limited to the GPT-6 Luna model in the desktop app, while Plus and higher plans can use it on the web, the desktop and phones.[4][32] Plugins replaced the earlier directory of apps and connectors on the same day, and custom GPTs are due to stop working on December 11, 2026, with owners offered a tool to turn them into plugins.[2][21]

Models

Which model answers depends on the mode and the plan.[7] Since October 7, 2026, Chat has run GPT-6 with what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI, which lets an answer contain charts, forms, buttons and small interactive tools as well as text.[6] On paid plans the Chat model is GPT-6 Sol, offered at levels from Instant to Extra High that trade speed for more reasoning, and a Pro option runs on GPT-6 Astra, the flagship OpenAI introduced on September 3, 2026.[7][33] Free and Go users get a smaller Luna model with a Think button for harder questions; in early November 2026 OpenAI's help articles called it GPT-5.6 Luna while its pricing page said GPT-6 Luna.[7][32] Work and Codex have their own model list, including GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra, which is not offered in ordinary conversations.[3] Naming models by size, with Sol as the flagship, Terra as the balanced model and Luna as the most economical, began with GPT-5.6 in July 2026.[37]

Plans, prices and advertising

Every plan, the free one included, allows unlimited everyday text chats, subject to guardrails against abuse; the plans differ in models, tools and how much of each they allow.[32] As of November 7, 2026, the US prices are $0 for Free, $8 a month for Go, $20 for Plus and $100, $200 or $500 for the three Pro tiers.[4] Business costs $20 per user a month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, and Enterprise and Edu are sold through OpenAI's sales team.[4] Go, which started in India in August 2025, became available worldwide on January 16, 2026.[14] On February 9, 2026, OpenAI began testing ads on Free and Go in the United States.[15] An ad appears below an answer, labeled as sponsored, and none are shown in temporary chats, beside conversations about health, mental health or politics, or to users identified as under 18.[15] OpenAI says ads do not change ChatGPT's answers and that advertisers receive only aggregated figures.[15][2] Ad sales reached an annualized run rate of $1 billion by August 31, 2026, and ads ran in 89 countries by October 21, 2026.[16][5]

Features added and retired

Around the core conversation, ChatGPT has added web search with linked sources, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and a real-time voice mode, and OpenAI keeps the list of these changes in its release notes.[2] As of November 2026, Voice offers Live, powered by GPT-Live-1.1, which listens and speaks at the same time, beside the earlier Advanced voice and a Standard option that transcribes speech before replying.[38] ChatGPT Images 2.6, released on November 4, 2026, is the current image maker.[39] OpenAI also retires products quickly. The Sora app and website for AI video were shut down on April 26, 2026.[20] Canvas, a side-by-side editor for writing and code, was removed from current models on May 28, 2026, and Pulse, a daily briefing, ended on June 17, 2026 as its updates moved into scheduled tasks.[2] Group chats closed to new use on July 9, 2026, and ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser OpenAI launched on October 21, 2025, stopped working on August 9, 2026.[2][40]

Users and the company behind it

OpenAI's own counts of weekly users rose from more than 100 million in May 2024 to 800 million in November 2025, more than 1 billion at the end of August 2026 and more than 1.2 billion on October 21, 2026.[11][18][16][5] CNBC reported on March 31, 2026 that ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly users and more than 50 million subscribers, as OpenAI closed a funding round of $122 billion at a valuation of $852 billion after the money came in.[17] OpenAI began in December 2015 as a nonprofit research lab.[36] Since October 28, 2025, its business has been run by OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation controlled by the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation.[41] Besides the consumer plans, OpenAI sells ChatGPT to companies, schools and universities through its Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.[4]

OpenAI's help center warns that ChatGPT's answers can be wrong or misleading while sounding sure, including invented quotations, studies and references.[28] On personal plans, chats may be used to train OpenAI's models unless the user switches that off, while Business, Enterprise and Edu content is excluded by default.[29] In late March 2023, Italy's data protection authority temporarily blocked ChatGPT over suspected breaches of privacy rules and the lack of age checks.[24] Access returned on April 28, 2023, after OpenAI made its privacy policy easier to find, added a form for Europeans to object to the use of their data in training and introduced age verification at sign-up in Italy.[24] The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft on December 27, 2023, alleging that millions of its articles had been used without permission to train their models.[22] OpenAI's position is that training on publicly available material is fair use.[30] During that case a court order in 2025 required OpenAI to keep consumer chats indefinitely; OpenAI says the obligation ended on September 26, 2025, though it still holds some data from that period that the Times is seeking.[23]

Model changes and user reaction

Changes to ChatGPT's personality and model lineup have drawn strong reactions from users. In late April 2025, OpenAI rolled back an update to GPT-4o after users shared examples of the assistant flattering them and praising risky ideas.[25] The company said the update had leaned too heavily on short-term feedback from users and promised changes to training and testing.[25] When GPT-5 replaced the older models in August 2025, paying users objected to losing the models they had chosen, and within days OpenAI put GPT-4o back in the model picker for paid plans and promised advance notice before removing models in future.[26] OpenAI later retired GPT-4o, GPT-4.1 and o4-mini from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026.[27] Advertising, introduced in 2026, was limited to the two cheapest plans: as of November 2026, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts carry no ads, and Free users can turn ads off in exchange for lower limits.[15]

What we think

This section is Heartipedia’s own opinion, not sourced fact. Each view is reasoned from the facts cited above and from trends we see; it may turn out wrong. A prediction’s words are never changed once made: when the facts are known we add the result under it, right or wrong. Every prediction we have made.

Work replaces Chat as the app's front door

We expect OpenAI to make Work the mode a new ChatGPT conversation opens in for paid users, or to merge Chat and Work into a single box that decides for itself whether a request is a quick answer or a longer job, before the end of 2027.

Why: In twenty months OpenAI went from a model picker to one router (GPT-5 in August 2025), and from separate apps to Chat, Work and Codex in one window (July 2026). Each step removed a choice the user used to make. Work already reads connected apps and finishes files, and Intelligent UI has made Chat answers look more like small tools, so the line between the two modes is getting thinner.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

Ads move into Work and shopping, never into Plus

We expect ChatGPT's ads to reach a second surface beyond the answer in Chat, such as sponsored suggestions inside Work tasks or in shopping results, by the end of 2027, while Plus and every higher plan stay free of ads.

Why: Ads reached a $1 billion run rate in under seven months and 89 countries by October 2026, and OpenAI was already testing a second format while images generate and a Sponsored Agents alpha. The ad-free paid plans are a selling point OpenAI has repeated since it announced ads, so the growth has to come from more places on Free and Go rather than from new plans.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Dec 2027 Made

A cheaper ad-free plan between Go and Plus

We expect OpenAI to sell an ad-free plan priced below $20 a month in the United States, either as a new tier or as an ad-free option on Go, by the end of 2027.

Why: Go at $8 shows ads and has no ad-free option, while Free users can already pay for no ads with lower limits. That leaves a gap at the price many people already pay for an ad-free video or music service, and OpenAI has filled every earlier gap in its price ladder with a new plan rather than a price change.

Prediction Confidence: Possible Check by: Dec 2027 Made

The next retirement is the Classic desktop app

We expect OpenAI to announce a shutdown date for the ChatGPT Classic desktop app before the end of 2027, and to keep retiring at least one other named ChatGPT feature a year.

Why: In 2026 alone OpenAI ended Sora, canvas, Pulse, group chats and Atlas, and set a date for custom GPTs. The old desktop app survives only as "ChatGPT Classic" beside the new one that holds all three modes, which is the position Atlas and the separate Codex app were in before they went.

Prediction Confidence: Likely Check by: Dec 2027 Made

ChatGPT changes too much, too often

We think ChatGPT's biggest weakness in 2026 is not any one model but the pace at which OpenAI renames, moves and retires things: a person who learned the product a year ago would not recognize its modes, its model names or half its features.

Why: Between February and November 2026 OpenAI retired GPT-4o, shut Sora, canvas, Pulse, group chats and Atlas, split the app into Chat, Work and Codex, swapped GPT-5.x for GPT-6 and gave its models size names, and its own help articles and pricing page disagreed about which Luna model free users get. The August 2025 GPT-4o reversal showed that users notice when something they rely on disappears.
