8. Moya's crew is stranded on a planet whose only local doctor feeds them a Qatal mollusk, telling each diner that the flesh must be swallowed whole and shared with a partner. Dividing the flesh among different stomachs, he reveals, produces fatal food poisoning, and the people who shared a mollusk now share a linked set of symptoms. His help has a price: the doctor demands a quarter-million currency pledge from each of them before he will help.
9. Human bodies, the doctor explains, cannot merge the way the mollusk halves can, so the shared symptoms will worsen and eventually kill the affected crew members. The cure he offers involves drinking a mixture made from the linked patient's urine while pressing bare hands together until the bacteria precipitate out.
10. The linked symptoms keep escalating as the crew decides how to meet the doctor's terms.
